I have been here multiple times and will continue coming back. Such an awesome place to either spend the day or just go for a few hours on a small hike. They also have a very cute zoo on the property that I highly recommend looking into!

I retired last year and this is my 77th hike. I have traveled quite a bit and I have hiked A LOT. Today at Bear Mountain Reservation I saw the lake often. I saw a deer, a coyote, and some hikers told me of a momma bear and cub that was reported. AND - we got a photo of a bald eagle. So those who report nothing to see are not looking. Also, this is not something I am not able to say often, the hikers that I spoke to on the trails were AMAZING!!!! I cannot wait to return here. SERIOUSLY - a bald eagle.

First time hiking at Bear Mountain Reservation. Nice causal hike, ample parking, trails are well marked, dog friendly and maps are available at parking lot just before the entrance of the trails. I did notice 1-2 picnic tables near the parking lot. Part of the Red trail over looks Candlewood Lake. Definitely will be hiking there again.

Too dry, not well maintained and too many bugs and ticks. People walk dogs here and do not clean up after themselves. Do NOT Recommend.

A beautiful setting. Not for the novice hiker. A rocky terrain. Parking on the street at the end of a residential road.

Both sneaker and hiking boot hiking available. Good meadow trails for casual hiker and bird watcher and the woods have well marked trails that offer some challenge. No facilities in the park so bring water .Follow the orange trails to the edge of Candlewood for some informal swimming ,not suitable for younger kids given scale of boat traffic wicked up hill hike to get back out

We have hiked here with our dog and our kids. The hikes can be very easy or more technical depending on which path you choose. You can stay on the top of the mountain and enjoy the view or hike down to Candlewood Lake. Regardless of the path, the hike is always wonderful. Kid friendly and pet friendly.

We went for a small hike. The place was busy (Sunday) with many people bringing coolers for picnic. The paths are mostly wide but sometimes a bit too narrow.

Nice parking area with picnic tables. Followed the red trail and some areas on the path were very muddy but when we walked further, it was beautiful grassy areas, very quiet. The only thing I found was that there are no garbage cans and I had to carry my dog’s poop back to my car. It’s no wonder there was poop in some areas. There should be some in the parking area.

Is it possible to go there during January? What kind of activities could we do?
Written 29 December 2016
People do hike there year round, just be prepared for muddy paths and trails in the winter. Bear Mountain is a park set aside just for walking/hiking. In the winter there are views of Candlewood lake, but otherwise no other set activities. The trail system is extensive and goes through a wide variety of terrain - especially back in the upland pond area (vernal pools), and several sections are rocky giving a great workout.
There's a great parking area with a map posted, with a port-a-John and picnic tables in the parking area.
Other than some excellent signage marking the trail system, constructed thanks to several Eagle Scouts from a local troop that I personally know, there are no other improvements.
Watch for lots of friendly dogs and owners walking the trails.
