I really enjoyed this zoo. Walking around takes about 2 hrs with young children. I went during lunch but brought my own lunch rather than purchasing lunch at one of the food stations. There were lots of exhibits under construction which was unfortunate. The rainforest...More
Really nice to walk around this park during an not hot day.

Small zoo that takes about an hour to go through. Parking is a nightmare. Pack your own food because even though Cafe has many offerings, service is very slow (45 - 1 hr wait after ordering). They should think about expanding cafe to handle volume....More
First time visitor to the Beardsley zoo while on my way to Mystic from NY. It was one of the smallest zoos I've ever visited but certainly had a lot to offer. I was using a motorized scooter to get around so can't really comment...More
While this zoo can't compete with the huge world-class zoos like San Diego or Houston, it is still a really nice place to spend a couple of hours. It is well kept and great for families.
I particularly liked the rainforest exhibit building. The greenhouse,...More
Beautiful grounds, lots of exhibits, animals in natural like habitats. A lot of walking, some hilly spots but plenty of spaces to sit and rest. Great for kids and adults. Great day trip if you are visiting CT. Check for AAA, AARP or Senior discounts....More

The area around the Zoo is low density, park-like residential area with rather low crime rates. As far as I could look up there is no establishments nearby that would be considered as contributing to delinquency (dive bars, etc). Vagrancy rate is also quite low. All and all I'll put this as area safe for family visit. On the anecdotal level - we haven't encountered any persons at the Zoo or nearby that would be of concern or nuisance. I felt that our children-ridden group was a lot safer there than say around Penn Station or Times Square. Parking situation is fluid, around 10 am there were plenty of spots, around lunch the lot was filling up. There was a guard directing incoming vehicles towards overflow parking as we were leaving around 1 pm. I would not worry about the car left in alternate lot or even on the street.
