This was the pinnacle experience of our trip and did not disappoint!!! We drove Ouray to Telluride over the pass and it was spectacular in September. We had below freezing temps early morning and mid 70's in afternoon. The trail is well marked and only...More

We did the Black Bear Pass in our Jeeps. We are very experienced jeepers and trail riders. This was pretty easy until coming down black bear pass which wasnt overly hard - just on very narrow rocky road on the edge of a cliff which...More

Use Dave's Mountain Tours for this experience. It was the best. Beautiful sites and a lot of prayers said as we took the 4 steps. Don.t try and drive it yourself.

Don't go all the way. You can't do it without a jeep, probably w some modifications. But up until close to the falls base, it's very doable! Pretty drive, great views back into telluride and beyond. One shallow water crossing and switchbacks but not tight...More

If you have a jeep, do Black Bear Pass! The scenery is beautiful and you do not really appreciate the mountains unless you get into the heart of mountain!

This pass is a one way jeep road but a fun hike from town with waterfalls and great views. It takes a while in the summer for the snow to melt so check with locals before riding or driving over it.

I did this early season, early in the morning, by myself, in a stock a 4runner; and I pretty much don't recommend doing any of that. Early season can have high snow walls with a deep mud channel, lock those diffs! If you're by yourself...More

My friends and I had been planning the black bear pass for over 1 year. My wife and child were too scared to go with us so they stayed in Ouray and shopped. The black bear pass has the best views I have seen on...More

If on your own, note that this is a full-on 4wd road with significant exposure, i.e. if you really screw up you could die. Roll your vehicle down several hundred feet of mountainside, that sort of thing. But if you have the vehicle and experience...More

We went on a half day trip from Telluride over Ophir Pass and back over Black Bear Pass with Telluride Outdoors. Our guide, Roger, was great.

Absolutely not. There would be absolutely no way to turn the corners coming down the switchbacks. It is very technical and very tight and we barely made them in a four door Rubicon Jeep and we are very experienced off road... More
