This trail offers nice views of the Gunnison River below, but you need a four-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle to get there, and it is not a good trail to hike on in the summer because there is no shade. It is best in the spring when the cactus flowers are in bloom. It is a nice trail for novice hikers.

My daughter and I visited the morning of Monday, May 29th. Memorial Day. We drove from Delta. We drove south from Delta, just past Olathe. We went East on Falcon Rd to where it connected with, and became, Peach Valley Rd. Gravel roads at that point. We drove North past Eagle Rd, Wave Rd, and Bobcat Rd, to Duncan Rd. Turning East on Duncan Rd, heading towards the trailhead, and Gunnison River. Duncan Rd is not recommended for sedans, or low clearance vehicles. We took it slow and easy with our Rav-4, and that at times was interesting to say the least. After a long, uphill climb, we made it to the trailhead. When we arrived, there were 3 other vehicles in the lot, a low clearance vehicle included. At the trailhead they have a covered picnic table and a restroom. Both were quite welcome. Per the instructions, we paid our $3 per person day use fee and put it in the lock box. And leaving our copy in the car on the dashboard so it could be seen from outside. We started out on the Duncan trail until it connected with the Bighorn trail/Loop. We went to the right, on the Bighorn trail. We followed it until it was going to head right, to complete a loop trail, but we decided to go left, towards the river. We followed the trail for a while, until we did not feel super comfortable in the trail itself and where it was taking us. To play it safe and not over extend ourselves, we then back tracked up to the Duncan trailhead. The trail that we hiked was quite enjoyable and was fairly challenging. We had a good time. Brought along plenty of water and food. We hike with trekking poles, which makes our hiking that much more enjoyable. I would like to return to this area some day and try hiking some of the other trails.
