We had a lot of fun visiting the museum. Everything was explained by our dressed up guides. The pumps were actually switched on and it was amazing to see such an old machine at work

The Cruqius museum is a marvel of 19th century engineering: a beautiful building (a bit like a castle) housing a massive steam engine. Three of these machines took three years and three months to empty the Haarlemmer lake, a task that would have taken 160...More

Unique building with a fascinating history of very capable Dutch Victorian age engineers, explaining the use of steam pumping to drain the land and create the Polders which are now a source of rich farmland.

What a great place. The outside has been restored. Inside you find out why it looks like a castle; it needs to be strong to house the amazing giant steam engine. The guide is enthusiastic and articulate. Good tea room next door.

Helped us understand the hydraulic engineering that the Dutch are masters of. The highlight of our visit was the explanation and demonstration of the massive steam pump by the passionate volunteer engineer.
