Not sure how to really appreciate this national land park as it is only rolling grasslands so it is boring.

It is just not my thing. There was nothing out there. You could see forever. And a certain peacefulness. But just not my thing.

At first you stare in wonder at how such buttes can exist in the middle of the flat lands. And, then you put on a little backpack with some waters and snacks and set out for what really is a pretty easy (~ 4 mile round trip) hike exploring nooks and crannies caused by water and wind erosion. Keep your... More

A great day trip from the front range. Fun hike out to the Buttes. 2 miles each way. Bikes are ok, dogs are ok. Picnic area with informational signs at the trail head.

Great hiking and natural views! Fascinating for recent oil and gas exploration nearby--amazing and informative! Take food and water. Families will have fun. NOT near the mountains, but the buttes, flowers, and grassland is lovely.

We try to go out and do some target practice at least once a month, and the Pawnee Grasslands is perfect for that! Depending on where you go, it can feel desolate and lonely, but I imagine that is what it was like before settlement in the nearby cities.

The scenery is incredible, something you don't see much in Colorado., no mountain views, just incredible rock formations and buttes. Great 5 mile hike RT will take you around the buttes. Beautiful vistas of the grassy plains. And the best thing, very little people. Now getting there is not easy, lots of gravel and dirt roads, but it is so... More

We enjoy going to the grasslands to get the whole family out for target practice and also to do some clay pigeon shooting. Plenty of places to be able to go and have lots of space to shoot.

The Pawnee National Grassland is a sprawling high desert prairie in remote Northeast Colorado. The hike to Pawnee Buttes has long vistas and is relatively flat. The Buttes themselves are impressive. It is a long distance to gas or food, so come prepared. There are minimal trailhead facilities. However, don't expect a wilderness experience that the National Grassland name might... More

I try to go every few years. It is wonderful to go in the spring to see the wild flowers and cactus in bloom. As a former Easterner I always gravitated to the mountains. Then figured I should take a look. The vastness and openess is special. During the spring and fall migratory birds are in abundance. Lark buntings, raptors,... More
