If going to visit during the winter months, be prepared to navigate on your own. However, there were plenty of park rangers and maps to help you. You can climb down into the dwellings, but the rock steps are steep and narrow. To get out, you must climb up wooden ladders. However, it is amazing to see and worth the... More

Yes Desiree, some of the Ranger-Guided Tours at Mesa Verde are not available during the winter but the scenery is amazing and touring the cliff dwellings on your own is exciting as you pointed out. Thanks for sharing your experience! More

First visit was in 1990 and have visited many times with family and friends who come to visit Colorado. There do not take reservations so in the summer months you need to be there when they open if you want a time slot earlier in the day and not in the heat of the day. The tours are unbearable with... Thank you for sharing Susan! Getting to the park early is very important to secure your tours of the cliff dwellings. I hope you got a good photo of the grand kids in all four states! More

We drove to the Mesa Verde National Park. We had a National Park pass which got us into the park for free. The National Park pass is $10 and is good for 2 people for life! Mesa Verde was a beautiful drive up the mountains. Saw a coyote or possible wolf hunting on the roadside. This is an archaeological preserve... More

National Park passes are a great way to save money if you are visiting several parks in one year. Mesa Verde is the first National Park as an archaeological preserve. Thanks Maggie! More

We traveled to Mesa Verde National Park with our son & daughter-in-law. They, along with my husband, hiked on a tour to the Step House & loved it. There is so much history to be explored here. We were there the weekend they were celebrating the 100th anniversary of our National Parks; and there were Navy sailors & officers for... More

Step House is our favorite self-guided tour. Mesa Verde is such a big park it can take two days to see, and even then you'll miss of it! Thank you Heather_Geo. More

We did two tours - the Balcony House and the Photography Cliff Dwelling tour. The later you must reserve online before going and was $20 per person. The former you get tickets the day you go, or up to 2 days early. We got there around 9:30 and only afternoon time slots were available. The Balcony House tour is more... More

This is a most see! Our girls are 11 and 12 and they loved it! Highly recommend the Balcony House but beware it is not for the faint of heart. You go up a 32 foot ladder and in a tunnel on your knees. There is very little as far as railings for safety, so you are on your own!... More

We did the driving tour and it was beautiful! The canyons and ruins were beautiful, lots of cool stops. We also stopped and got fresh Fry Bread from Navajos and it was delicious! We finished with a tour to the ruins under the cliff and it was absolutely brilliant! Like traveling back in time! Great for families, very educational and... More

BRING WATER! Having said that, this place is a wonder. We took the self-guided tour and hiked the Petroglyph trail. The scenery is incredible, and seeing the history is mind-boggling. The trail says it's about 1.5 miles, and that is 100% not true. You can make it 1.5 miles, but you won't be done. It's an easy hike if you... More

When you clime the hill to enter the park, You'll be more amazed when you reach the top, than you were when you headed up. Take any road in this park and stop to see the pueblos built into the walls of the valley. People used to climb in and out of these pueblos to hunt and forage. The complicated... More

Mesa Verde was an amazing place to visit. Loved seeing where the Pueblos called home. It is really beautiful. The tours are only $4.00 a person, what a deal. We did the balcony tour and it was great. I'm sure the others are too. While in Durango, this is one place you must visit!
