Description:

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art is temporarily closed to...

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art is temporarily closed to expand our universe! The museum’s new building, located at 12th Avenue and Bannock Street and expected to open in early 2018, will offer visitors an enhanced experience with approximately 65% more display space while staying true to the salon style and intimate atmosphere for which the Kirkland is known.

The museum’s three collections are:

• International Decorative Art—A celebrated collection including notable examples of every major design period from Arts & Crafts to Postmodern.

• Colorado & Regional Art—The largest repository of art showcasing the state and region’s talent, concentrating on the 1850s through the 1990s with about 7,000 works more than 700 artists.

• Vance Kirkland Retrospective—Kirkland (1904–1981) is generally considered Colorado’s most distinguished modern painter. About 550 paintings and about 600 drawings and prints are held in his estate collection.

Central to the move, Vance Kirkland’s art school & studio building (built 1910–1911 for Henry Read's Students' School of Art) was relocated to Bannock Street and oriented in the same direction. In a feat of engineering, the 1,384 square foot building was detached from the existing museum, moved eight blocks west and placed on the north side of the new museum on November 6, 2016.

This museum has the most incredible collection and the way it is organized is fantastic. The art here is beyond what one would get to see at the Denver Art Museum and it is more fun and less stuffy than the DAM too.

This museum is for the creative eyes only! Creations of furniture, jewelry, paintings in all mediums, photographs, Kirkland artist studio, Kirkland paintings, gives you great insight to who Kirkland was and how he worked, technique developed. The museum is well lit with lots of character lighting, visually you won't be disappointed! I loved it! It's kind of a out of... More

Curious cute little museum. Loved the decorative items from interesting looking sofas to the chinaware. Favorites for me were the sculpture garden and Kirkland's dot painting. However, I believe the museum is currently closed as they are moving to a different building.

Well worth the visit. Great stuff! I loved it! You can get very close to most of the objects. Beware they are moving to larger quarters

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing so much of Vance Kirkland's art in one place. It was interesting to see the progression of his art through many styles. His studio was also very interesting to see. I highly recommend a visit. FYI the museum is in the process of being relocated so it won't open up until Fall 2017.

My sister and I visited the Kirkland a couple of weeks ago, and were very impressed. The art collection was beautiful, and organized in a very nice way. The staff were courteous, and helpful.

Jam packed museum of decorative arts that is currently closed and is in process of moving to a much needed bigger building that will be close to the Denver Art Museum and the Clifford Still Museum. This is a wonder trip down memory lane of decorative arts and will be worth the wait to visit again. Living in Denver makes... More

I love the Kirkland because it embraces the true intention of the Arts and Crafts philosophy: surround yourself with beauty....every object in your household can inspire. The downside to a visit there is that I want all of the pottery, especially. And Kirkland's art is spectacular!
