- Ken453 contributionsOnly wish I had more time...A great way to spend the day. Reasonable admission and parking is free. (Note that, as per the website, advanced ticketing is required at this time. Morning entry is also restricted during the week at this time to accommodate the volume of school groups.) Pretty big zoo so have your walking shoes primed and ready to hike. Very easy to get around, though, with mostly flat terrain and well maintained walkways. Staff and volunteers here are very knowledgeable and engaging. I encountered many crew members interacting with guests. Presentations are well done. Elephant training demo was a must and Billy was awesome in his participation...and he loves his broccoli. There are many cool, uncommon critters here not often seen and they have successful SSP husbandry programs resulting in new blood for the survival of these rarities. Specifically, the Malayan tapir...and Rinny was very active. And the gerenuk, a seldom encountered member of the antelope family. New baby kudu getting zoomies was a highlight and the playful interactions with Penny, the gerenuk, were unexpected. The elephant facility is impressive and the dynamics of the bachelor herd and it's purpose are an integral part of the SSP. Unfortunately, the bridge in elephant passage wasn't in use because of the necessity for creative arrangement of the occupants so missing that was a bummer since it's unlikely I'll be making a trip to Denver again soon. Mahali getting the zoomies was a surprise and he really wanted to sink his bouy. There is a carousel, train and 4D theater as well as feeding opportunities for lorikeets and stingrays. Note that 'Down Under' is still under construction but set to open to the public soon.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 May 2024
- ConR007Wichita, Kansas28 contributionsDenver Zoo: a diamond in ColoradoDenver zoo is a beautiful zoo with a central focus on Africa that allows you around the continent while visiting other iconic continents and their animals. Zoo designers have done a great job of brining the culture and decor of each habitat to life so you can get a sense of the habitat around the animal(s). There were a few closed areas for renovations but all and all a great zoo. How does it compare to some of the legends? I like it better than Omaha’s Zoo and the Smithsonian zoo in D.C. (dare I say?). I believe this zoo invests in the experience and environment around the zoo as you walk and rest and not just the animals and their extravagance. It’s also set in a pretty area with other attractions nearby. That should count for something.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2024
- Knut148 contributionsOk zooWe went on a Saturday afternoon and parking was definitely a challenge. The weather was hot so the animals were not very active so wish we would have went in the morning. The workers were all very friendly. Bottle of water was way too expensive but that is everywhere.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2024
- JayMarii RLaramie, Wyoming23 contributionsAn absolute must seeMe (21) and my friend (32) went together to explore the Denver Zoo. At first I was worried about its size and if it was going to be able to be an all day thing. It absolutely was! There is so much to see! All of the employees were super kind and actually showed enthusiasm about their jobs, even the people at the food stands. There are so many animals and so many things to do. It is definitely an all day thing as we arrived 30 minutes after opening and left only 30 minutes before close. Absolutely recommend.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 July 2024
- Lisa WWichita Falls, Texas1,176 contributionsCrowded but fun. There were a lot of people there for a Thursday morning, but overall it was a very nice zoo. It was a hot day, but there was a lot of shade and a lot of places to get water and misting stations. The best exhibit in my opinion was the orangutans. There was a full family with a mom, dad, child, and infant, doing family things. They were adorable and entertaining.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2024
- KaelaSeattle, Washington1,235 contributionsGood way to spend an afternoonSpent an afternoon here when we had time to kill before starting our road trip north. Pretty nice assortment of animals and we were able to see a lot. Many food locations and well located restrooms and we also really enjoyed the gift shop. Loved the penguins!Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 August 2024
- AS6016Albany, New York707 contributionsBest zoo in the United States!!!Where do I start? Parking was easy, organized, and free, and the exhibits were laid out in a logical manner. We parked in the parking lot, the friends we met there parked on the street for free. All around great exhibits for the mammals, most with room to roam, other than the snakes and reptiles. Their cages were proportionally tiny. It was great seeing the elephants, penguins and white mountain goats to name a few. The kangaroo exhibit, was quite the experience with Kangaroos hanging out in the of their human admirers, some even taking naps on the walkway. We spent 3 1/2 hours at the zoo though could have easily spent more time there. We didn't eat there so can't comment on the quality or costs. One recommendation is to have better signage listing daily feeding times and animal talks.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 August 2024
- Jeffrey BlankenshipSpring, Texas32 contributionsGreat ZooZoo was a great little bonus of my trip to Denver. Needed to kill some time before our flight out and we decided to stop by. Is laid out super well, and no backtracking was needed. Great animals and great staff.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 October 2024
- Joshua BerkovitzWest Bloomfield Township, Michigan1,055 contributionsWonderful zoo.The Denver zoo is a great place to spend a day. It is great for all ages. Very well maintained zoo Parking Lot is very close and very convenient. There are plenty of areas to seat down relax. Good conscience with plants of seating capacity. Great signs and explanations about the different kinds of Animals. For sure a great fun and educational experience.Visited October 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 October 2024
- Bill KMantorville, Minnesota6,852 contributionsExcellent ZooThis zoo is a must stop if you are looking for things to do in Denver...especially if you have kids. This zoo is constantly improving their animal care and enclosures. The wide array of animals to see makes this one of the top zoos in the U.S. One note: If you are planning to attend on a very hot day, you may not see some of the animals. Like most creatures they will seek cooler places to be. I noticed in some of the other reviews that people complained about many of the animals being absent. I am guess that is due to excessive heat.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 November 2024

The Denver Zoo deserves major praise for opening its doors in such a user-friendly manner in the midst of Covid-19. The online reservation system limits visitors and enabling social distancing. And the path flow (follow the arrows!) ensures you can literally see all of the open exhibits. We were so pleased with our visit and wish the zoo great success in continuing operations during these unusual circumstances and beyond.
Special thank you to Ryan S. at the front and Elly near the rhinoceros exhibit who went out of their way to be extra helpful to us. Thank you all!

We had 2 adults and 2 children and went about 10:30am to 1 on Saturday Jan. 4, 2020. We packed a lunch and bought a wagon for the kids. We have a family pass and with the pass you get some free passes. It's a fast separate line for people with passes. The pass is nice as you don't have to feel like you have to do the entire zoo and you can use it at other zoos as well. We usually head a different direction each time to see different areas of the zoo. It was 60 degrees! The animals were out playing. There were 4 lions and one was swatting a large ball around. There were exotic pigs playing with things that looked like large spools. The monkeys were pounding gourds on the concrete trying to break them open. The cheetahs were being fed. A boa had a rabbit it was going to possibly eat. We checked back twice and it had not eaten the rabbit in the time we were there. Lots of animals, not a long line and beautiful weather. We had a fabulous time!

A nice zoo. We purchased the membership which was great for early Saturday morning visits when the zoo was not as crowded. The downside was that not all of the exhibits / food stands are open at that hour. Free parking is nice.

We decided to take our 18-month-old here for a visit, and it was a pleasant experience overall. The admission price is very reasonable given the quality of the zoo, and guests can opt to purchase extra experiences, including a 4D theater!
Since we visited in winter, many of the animals weren't out. This is understandable, but I felt bummed with the lack of interior viewing areas; many zoos across the country have both indoor and outdoor viewing areas so that guests can see animals regardless of weather. However, we did see camels, giraffes, wild dogs, elephants, and goats, and the Tropical exhibit was excellent! There is plenty of food available, but (as expected) be prepared to pay a pretty penny for mediocre food. I love that there is "stroller parking" outside the buildings that house indoor exhibits...strollers are such a nuisance in small places.
Good experience; definitely prefer the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, but this is a good spot to enjoy a few hours if you're in the area.

Simon and Garfunkel used to sing, "It's all happenin' at the zoo." But that's not the case at the Denver Zoo. When I made my ticket reservations two weeks ago, they had nothing on their website about closing all bird exhibits due to HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza), or as they call it, bird flu. I can understand the safety measures, but they should have announced it on their website immediately and offered those who had already bought tickets a refund. As it was, numerous exhibits were closed and yet visitors still paid the regular entry fee. I was so looking forward to the great penguin exhibit as well as the flamingos. In addition, many of the other animals weren't on exhibit. There would be a sign that said, "If you don't see me, look inside." You looked inside, there was nothing but a sign saying, "If you don't see me, look outside." I heard several visitors wondering where animals were and commenting about another exhibit where the animal was no where to be found. Plus parts of the zoo are under construction, creating bottlenecks for pedestrians and the plethora of baby strollers. I've been to much better zoos in smaller towns, like Little Rock and Memphis.

I have to admit that we are most likely spoiled with our Zoo in Wichita, Ks. The Amphibian section of the zoo was amazing and we LOVED watching the beautiful anaconda as she was extremely active. The rest of the zoo was kind of empty for our visit as they are doing a ton of construction right at this time, and of course it is pretty cold for the rest of the animals. We will definitely come back to see the improvements once the weather is nicer

We were a little worried many displays would be closed due to Covid 19, however that was not the case! You have to reserve your entrance time, which was easy to due online. Parking was free in a underground ramp. At the zoo, There were two loops we had the option of taking to keep foot traffic going In one direction. The entire path through the zoo was well marked out with arrows on the ground and hay bales to make paths. I enjoyed the marked out path because it made it easy to not miss anything! It never felt crowded and we were easily able to social distance. They are very good about enforcing mask wearing. I saw workers disinfecting while at many of the displays. The displays are set up for good viewing of the animals and we were impressed by how much room each animal had. Hand sanitizer was offered all over the park. The LEGO displays were awesome and fun to watch for as we walked. It took us 4 hours to do the entire park. We highly recommend this zoo!

We visited the zoo in March 2020, mainly because we finished the things we really wanted to do in Denver early. A good number of exhibits did not have animals, as it was still fairly cold. However, the prices are raised starting March 1st. The selection of animals we did see was decent, and we saw two of the animal feedings. However, I was hoping to see move animals native to Colorado.

The day we went was hot and masks are required right now with COVID which is understable. They are requiring reservation to be made prior to arrival. With the Heat many animals were not out which was disappointing but the zoo overall was a nice zoo and offered lots of exhibits (if the animals were out).

My husband and I just returned from the Denver Zoo today April 26, 2021. We're visiting from out of town and thought it would be a fun activity. Wrong! This was the most boring zoo we've ever been to. Compared to our experience at the San Francisco and San Diego Zoos, this zoo pales in comparison..There were hardly any animals for us to see. The mainline animals ( e.g. lions, tigers, African Elephants) were no where to be seen. The few that were out looked pitifully bored. Spending $20 per person was a waste. Not only were we disappointed with the animals but the food service and gift shop service was extremely slow and it wasn't that busy. We won't be recommending this zoo to anyone soon

Do I have time to fully explore the Zoo and the Nature and Science Museum in one day? I read that the Science Museum you could spend 1/2 day there. Thanks!!
Written 14 May 2021
You could fully explore both, but you would probably have to rush through. I would recommend exploring each on separate days to fully experience the exhibits.
