I love Shelf Road, my wife doesn't. To me it's exciting and intriguing to drive where stage coaches road decades ago. For my wife it's a white knuckle hell.

Awesome road from Canyon City to Cripple Creek. You do NOT want to take this drive in anything other than a four wheel drive vehicle and you want to take the road from Canyon City to Cripple Creek for better views rather than from Cripple...More

Very scary with eroding roads but beautiful! Scenery was stunning! Still some snow in place! My adult daughter was scared!

This is a great drive if you're brave and trust the person behind the wheel. I will start by saying this is not a drive you should take lightly and you wouldn't want to go down this road by accident. The best way to do...More

We thought this would be a good shortcut to Cripple Creek from the Canon City area. NOT! It was scary: narrow, rough, and a big drop-off on the shelf part.

Have taken the road with visitors numerous times. The trip is always the highlight of their visit. Very seldom have I encountered other vehicles making the trip even more special.

I thought the road was super, super scary, but the spectacular scenery made it worth the trip. The really bad, scary 'shelf' part is when you come from near Canon City heading toward Cripple Creek. When you are going this way, you will be on...More

Traveled this road in July 2015 and the scenery was awesome. Postcard Photo op's around every corner. Perfect cruise for our jeep with the top down. Road was not too rough or hairy. The shelf section still had ample room to maneuver.

many reviews speak to the complexity of the road and its plenty wide for a full sized pick up that i was driving and still room that you didn't feel close to the edge. the views were great but Phantom Ranch was way better, then...More

Renee, another thing: If you plan to take Shelf Road, you'll want to ask exactly how to access it from Canon City. It's not hard, it's just that there aren't any signs directing you to it for some reason! And no matter which... More

I would imagine that the road is open in winter, since there is/are a house or two. However (and I should probably have used CAPS), first, I'd call Teller county roads dept. for conditions and secondly, I'd make sure I had... More
