Armenian monastery known for its frescoes
10th century Armenian fortress overlooking the town of Akhtala. Inside the operating church you will see detailed frescoes. Outside are fortress and mining ruins. Stunning views of the area from here. Large parking lot outside the monastery gates. Women do NOT need to cover their hair inside Armenian churches.

Visit from Georgia and enjoy this monastery
Great place to visit . It is one of the 3 monasteries you will get to see as part of a day trip to this country from Georgia . The monastery can be used to compare between Armenian and Georgian churches and their design . Nevertheless, it was awesome seeing all of these sites as they are very different from each other .

A must-visit during your transit between Georgia and Armenia
Akhtala Monastery is a 10th-century Armenian Apostolic monastery located in the town of Akhtala. The main church at the compound is famous for its highly artistic frescoes, which cover the inside walls. This is an offbeat site, among all the monasteries I had visited in Armenia and Georgia, this had the best frescoes.

This was our first of three monastery visit while on our full day trip from Tbilisi to Armenia. The grounds, the architectural design, and the stunning inside just gave us chills! So much history, and what a peaceful place to walk around! This is something not to be missed!

This place is very unique. The location is great with a perfect view over a gorge and mountains. Near the monastery you can find the walls of an ancient castle with its tower. The monastery inside is all covered with wall paintings. The place is very old and is not renovated, which gives the place more power.

Pretty interesting center for Lori visitors. Level of customer service is high enough. Barbeque, salads and wine are indescribably delicious. Besides, here you can find souvenirs made of wood and clay by local artisans, see the armenian way of baking butter tipical to ancient times.

This monastery close to the Georgian border is often overlooked by tourists, who prefer visiting the Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries, making this a very quiet place. But it can be easily combined with those to monasteries, and is located close to the Sanahin monastery. Although not a UNESCO World Heritage site, this monastery is unique in the amount and preservation of the interior frescoes, and is well worth a visit. The frescoes are preserved on 5 different walls, and have been restored recently. Just note that there is no artificial lightening inside, so it is quite dark. The monastery also has the ruined remains of a church, which has nicely decorated portal and part of the defensive tower and wall, which most monasteries built in the 13th century had. the wall is best seen if you make a short walk down the road. The tower of the church has collapsed long time ago, and there are some plans to rebuild it, so maybe check in advance if this is happening (probably not in the first few years).

Akhtala fortress, as I remember the way was unpaved at the last stage and you have to go up and up. The best view to look at the fortress when you will be in the other side and can see the walls clearly. Just stop there and take a shot than continue. When we were there it was obvious it's not active as no one was there at all. So we just walked around, took some photos and looking at the old fortress wall (the one inside). I loved the big rings status. Looks like wedding rings or at least this is what cross my mind when I saw it first.

The Akhata monastery and fortress were constructed in the 9-10th c. Inside is a huge image of Jesus Christ that is very rich with colorful ornaments). Do to its extensive decoration with holy icons and wall paintings, the Akhata monastery church looks more Orthodox than Armenian. In the car park there's a friendly dog. Don't forget to bring some doggy treats for him (her?).

Aghtala Monastery is also known as Pghindzavank. It is a 10th Century fortified Armenian Apostolic church monastery in the region of Lori.

This monastery is on a hill top (not far from the old cable car that's just suspended mid air and left to rust) and offers some lovely views in amongst the old abandoned industrial but artistic wreckage left from the Soviet mines and factories.

This monastery had been abandoned for over 500 years. Yet the spectacular frescoes inside were amazing and well maintained. Few visit this site, which to me is an absolute shame because it's one of the most unique experiences on monastic art and architecture.
