The city of Jalore boasts of a majestic fort that is the symbol of valor & strength. There is a famous saying about this historical place; “Let the sky be torn, the earth turned upside down, let the iron armor be cut to pieces, body fighting alone, but Jalore would not surrender” which speaks a lot about the fort. The fort is said to be one of the most impregnable forts in our country. It has now become a popular tourist destination for people visiting Rajasthan. The Jalore Fort is situated on a1200 feet mountain. Named after a saint the town of Jalore was earlier called Jabalipura. The Sukri River, a tributary of the Luni River flows near the city. Maharana Pratap’s mother was from Jalore and the fort was used to keep their treasures safe. Read on further for more details.

I visited the fort in November 2008. It is one of oldest forts of Rajasthan and is famous for long siege and battle between its Rajput king and Khilaji in early 14th century. The base point for climb -up is an unspectacular place and can only be approached through narrow lanes. The autorickshaw is best vehicle to reach to base. From there it is about 40 minutes climb up. There are some excellant defense gates on the way up.They are namely Suraj Pole, Dhruv Pole,Chand Pole and Sire Pole. The way up is also dotted with many small srines. On top and inside the fort thre are Jain temples, Hindu temples, old palace buildings and some waterholes. The water storage system in palace building is worth noting. One can enjoy the fine view of Jalore town from top.
The best time to visit is October to March. in other months one should climb up in morning. It can be hot later in the day. On return one should not miss to visit Topkhana a beautiful 14th century building located in the town within walking distance from the base point.

As the folklore goes, the fort was built by Legendary Chouhan Ruler of Jalore Rao Kanhad Dev Chouhan, who received funds as well as technology and support from the then Emperor Sultan Ala-Ud-Din Khilji of Delhi to ensure his daughters Firoza's marriage with the most suitable, brave, handsome and good looking Prince Veeram Deo Chouhan. Brave Veeram stole Firoza's heart when he won a Duel beating the Emperor's best Duel fighter rated as the best on the continent. These kinds of most prestigious duels and competitions of the continent were held in the Capital Delhi, where women of the royal family also could bet and witness. Prince Veeram fought as an ordinary Rajput warrior and the favorite daughter of the Sulatn Firoza swore to get married only to this Brave young man and no one else. The story is too worthy of being made into a Block-Buster movie some day.
Wish governments also wake and manage a motor-able way up this Up-hill destination and try to restore it to enable more elderly and interested visitors to go up.
WARNING- Tough and steep up-hill walk on age old path created by warriors of the past, would be tough for elderly people, do carry your own food, water and eatables, wont find them there besides may be at the sprawling Jain temple on hill top.

Well worth the climb of 1500 steps for the view and the desolate palace of Raja Nan Singh along with numerous temples and shrines

It's a beautiful fort but not at all maintained.. government should take care and protect such heritage places.. Jain temples on the fort have still maintained the fort in terms of cleaniness and stay..
Government should support tourism on such heritage places.. but yes a must visit place..

It is tough to get on top with so many steep steps, not an easy task. But once on top you will realize it is all worth. The views are jaw dropping. The palaces in ruin look beautiful with a feel of abandance for the place. You definitely see more than what you expect. Amazing experience. There is also a Jain Temple, a mosque and a police chowki above.
