We came in early may and it was a different feel for sure. Everything was slower and most places are in between winter and summer operations. Some businesses are closed. It was still nice to walk around!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2023
- msa23_2000Chino Hills, California1,479 contributionsIt’s a little too big so it loses some of its charmAfter traveling through some quaint towns to get here (like Buena Vista and Leadville) this Main Street just seems too big and commercial, not as charming as other Rocky Mountain towns. Lots of people, although there is a lot to do. Better to get off and walk in the old historic district.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2023

It's built for tourists but for some reason does not feel overly "touristy". The cafes and restaurants are all different and have their own niches and local flair. If you have a mixed party (men, women, kids, etc.) there is something for everyone and a good way to spend a relaxing afternoon if your tired from outdoor activities. Some of the clothing is a little over priced but that's to be expected in a spot like this.Visited August 2023Written 26 August 2023

The National Historic District in Breckenridge is very cute. Lots of little shops and restaurants. Unfortunately the sidewalks are not maintained at all from the snow, so be prepared and walk carefully.

Main street in the winter was awesome! It seemed like I was in a Hallmark movie walking along the charming shops. There are big retailers like Columbia and Patagonia and small, local shops and restaurants. It only goes for about 4 blocks, so it is absolutely walkable, but there is so much to see and do that it won't be quick. The little plaza next to the welcome center is great to take pictures and/or people watch.

I agree with the recent Tripadvisor article https://www.tripadvisor.com/Articles-lzJpeTn99clQ-Best_places_to_travel_august_us.html that Breckinridge, CO is one of the best places in the US to visit in Aug. We reside in the Denver suburb, and have been going there as a family (with 2 young children) every Aug. for the past 5 years. The Main Street is indeed a nice place to visit and hang out but this year, it has left me a bitter taste in my mouth. It used to be one of the more affordable ski towns to visit in CO (comparing to Vail and Aspen) but eating out has become ridiculously expensive. All the restaurants, coffee shops, and ice cream shops started to impose these out of control additional 5% service fee + 4% resort fee (as if the whole town is a resort when there are no "resort amenities") + automatic 18% tip for most sit-down restaurants in addition to the nearly 9% sales tax. Any food (crepe, ice cream, coffee, you name it) is double or triple the price you'd pay in Denver. All the restaurants on Main Street were all unimpressive so far. I understand that these places are "tourist traps" but really? Do you really have to be that money-hungry? If you go there, I'd recommend either packing your own lunch by buying something at a local City Market (Kroger/King Soopers) or drive a little bit to Frisco or Silverthorne and pay the normal folk price for better food.

So walking Main Street one will find lots of restaurants, lots of bars, lots of businesses, lots of gift shops and all of it looking pretty nice and clean. Enjoyed our walk and parking lots were easy to use for visitors. To be honest not as nice as my favorite mountain town of Telluride and all its charm, but quite enjoyable none the less.

This is a wonderful area to spend several hours, or several days, exploring the shops, galleries, eateries, etc.
We last visited here 5+ years ago, and were glad to rekindle the memories.
The Visitor's Center is a great place to start one's orientation to the area; with plenty of information, and an attached museum offering an interesting historical perspective of Breckenridge.
The shops range from touristy souvenir havens, to high-end art galleries; with a wide-range of options, in content and price-range, from which to choose in between (we really enjoyed Timeless Collections, among others).
And, if one cannot find an establishment to satisfy a gastronomic hunger or craving, one just isn't trying.
We visited mid-week mid-May, so the pace was leisurely and uncrowded; allowing us to enjoy the architecture and ambiance of the area (which is one reason we enjoy traveling off-season).
No matter when one visits, however, this section of Breckenridge is likely to offer up some pleasurable experiences.

Hi there, my family are coming to Breckenridge for a white Xmas. We are travelling from New Zealand. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips? Are the Ubers reliable? Cheap eats? What's open on Xmas day?

If we are looking to stay in Breckenridge from 22-27 December 2019 with our kids can you suggest if there's a certain strip/road we should stay on or is anywhere in Breckenridge good... I'd like to try to stay somewhere with 2 bedrooms as it is Christmas and want it to feel special being we're travelling from Sydney, Australia

You really can't go wrong wherever you stay. We've been twice in summer, but I imagine Christmas is beautiful. Where you stay really depends on what you are looking for. The town is small, there is a free trolley, and some properties have free shuttles to get you where you need to go. Search for lodging based on your priorities. Would you prefer to ski in and out? walk less than 5 mins to the slopes? stay on a shuttle route? Recommendation: you do not want to drive if you don't have to. Parking is difficult. Stay at a property with free parking, and only move the car if you need to go to the grocery store. If skiing is not your thing, I'd recommend Main Street Station. Google Vacation Rentals By Owner -- we found our condo through that site at a much cheaper rate. You can also rent at Main Street Station through Wyndham Vacations. Once you identify a few properties that sound good to you, come back to TripAdvisor and search through customer reviews. Best of luck!

Where to stay

I can second Debbie C's recommendation, but it's actually called "GRAND Timber Lodge" (not Great). It IS however a great place!! Year before last, we had a wonderful condo there, and a great deal through VRBO, in the late-season, and enjoyed it immensely. ...Awesome amenities (hot tub's a gotta-do!), and if you rent skis on-site, you can ski right out & back in.. Easy! ...Be sure to be back at 4:00pm daily, for some billiards, and free fresh-baked cookies every afternoon! Yum.
This year we stayed at Chesette's Lodge, in Alma, CO...about 29 mins from Breck. Also a VERY nice place (and very great deal), if you don't mind the drive into town.
If you do that, the best plan is plan is to park near the Breck Connect Gondola; ride it up; then catch either the Independence or Rocky Mountain Superchair to the trails of your choice.
NOTE: If you work your way all the way over to Peak 8 (or further), through the day, there's a little-known secret that you can take the 4 O'clock run right straight back to the Gondola parking lot, where there's a walk-thru to your car! ...Handy to know if you're coming back down, during the 4:00pm "rush-hour". You won't have to wait, in the e-n-d-l-e-s-s line, for the Gondola ride back down!! wink! ;-)
...You can Google a trail map to see what I mean (can't post a link-sorry)
Hope you have a great trip! Breck is my #1 favorite ski resort...the *people* are always really friendly, the resort staff & management do a *terrific* job, the views are stunning, and the skiing is absolutely world class!
Blessings...and hope this helps!
PS - The food & drinks are wildly expensive on the slopes! They're good! ...But, either bring your credit card, or bring a bag lunch! :-)

Not many nice places to stay on main st. I recommend staying on the mountain at one of the lodges. There is a free gondola 🚠 down to main st. It’s only a 6-7 minute ride.
Hi I will be going with my two sons ages 8 and 11 to Breckenridge in December but will like to do other things besides skying for example snow tubbing etc which sky center would you choose copper mountain or keystone? I won’t have a car

Unsure about this. But from most of the mountains they have the ski lifts to take you down into town. We had a car but only used it for trips to other areas of Colorado.

I will be in Denver the week before Christmas and would love to take a side trip to Breckenridge. Are there other ways to get there for a day trip besides renting a car and praying the roads are clear?

Yes. There are numerous shuttle services from DIA, and there is a much cheaper bus (The Bustang) that goes from downtown Denver to Frisco twice and day. Frisco is the next town over from Breck, and there are easily accessible free buses that go from Frisco to Breckenridge.

Sorry for the late reply. If you are looking for snow I’m not sure there will be any. If what you want are the sights and to see the pretty little town probably yes. We are planning to go back to Colorado in the autumn to see the change of leaves. It most be breathtaking.
