This was the first hike we did when we moved to Boulder years ago. It is about one
mile up and a small elevation gain of about 500 feet (we were still winded our first time).
We still hike here occasionally, as the views are noteworthy. One time on a very windy day, we reached the top as a funeral was taking place, and someone's ashes were being spread around. The wind took hold and blew late Aunt May's ashes all in our hair & faces. Memorable.

This is a paved road that turns off Boulder Canyon road. This residential area provides beautiful views and a look at mountain living close to Boulder.

My husband and I hiked Sugar Loaf Mountain this july 2016. It is a steady up hill climb and if you are not in shape , take a rest But well worth the climb. The path is very rocky and the climb down can be harder the the climb up. There is a bench at the top , so we sat and rested for a bit and took some beautiful pictures.

This was my 5th trip to Colorado, and hiking to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain will remain one of the best experiences of all 5 visits. This is probably one of the easiest summit hikes in the area, so it is perfect for families with young kids. It is just over 2 miles round trip, with less than 500 feet in elevation gain. A more well-traveled route heads right from the main trailhead, a rougher trail heads left. We headed up right before sunset (5 kids ranging from 9 to 13...my boys easily could have hiked this at 5 or 6) on a windless, partly cloudy evening in July and it was a magical experience. We had the summit to ourselves for about 45 minutes. You have a 360 degree view of the mountains, looking east towards Boulder, north and west towards RMNP, and south towards Roosevelt National Forest. It is a steep drive over dirt road to get to the trailhead, but we made it fine in a mini van. In the winter, there is no way we would have made it in snow. This is truly a hidden gem...I can't recommend it enough!

Had a nice hike through Sugarloaf. Great scenery, challenging but not too much for novice hikers. Do it!

Sugarloaf is almost an icon. You can really see for ever up there. It is the subject of quite a few art pieces and changes character with the weather. Hiking in summer or snowshoeing in winter it has a magical aura. We knew people living up in that area so had to get out and explore but if you are visiting nearby it is worth making the side trip.

This is the best time of year to see the Aspens and other trees change colors and this is the curvy road to do it on. Don't speed.

Actually well worth the effort, and one of the few place I hiked around Boulder that wasn't crowded.

Very nice hike up the mountain - fairly easy but tough for an east coast girl not used to the elevation! But such great views so didn't mind stopping every once in a while to take them in. Highly recommend on a clear day. Not many people there at all on the Sunday we went.
