I get a charge out of each time I drive across this important bridge on I-80. It links the inner Bay Area to Sacramento and Lake Tahoe and crosses a narrow part of the Bay. The views are terrific.

This bridge was named after Alfred Zampa. Zampa was an ironworker who worked on several of the SF Bay area bridges. He survived a fall during the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and was a member of the "halfway to hell" club. He represents many of the ironworkers (based in Solano & Napa Counties) who built and maintained the areas many bridges.

We often commute across the Carquinez Bridge. It is a simple elegant bridge that also has a path for walking between Vallejo and Crockett. We also love the views from the water when out kayaking.

Although the AL Zampa bridge is very pretty, especially when lit up at night, IT IS A STUPID DESIGN. The City of Vallejo cheaped out when building it. For only a small percentage of extra cost they didn't make it strong enough to support sensible BART train tracks in the foreseeable future to tie SF to Sacramento. This will put BART going through Benicia or Antioch effectively cutting Vallejo from mass transit.

My father used to say Vallejo is run by the 7 dwarfs ( city council) he was right.

Two separated bridges with one for the north and one for the south bound traffic. Both bridges distinctly different. Very nice!

We have driven across the Carquinez Bridge multiple times. We usually cross it when going to Napa or going further East such as to Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Reno.

There are nice water views.

One pays tolls going northbound direcion; currently six dollars.

There is no fee going south.

We drove over and found it to be amazingly nice with top notch engineering and construction. A physical beauty for sure.

If your thinking about using this route of travel, my advise is leave early and have patients. Bridge is very busy but the view if your not driving, is beautiful. Lots of traffic so have other members of your party take the pictures.

Compared to the larger more windy bridge by Concord or the tall one by Antioch, this is a piece of cake. Use this one and the little connecting roads, if afraid of heights like me.

Lots of traffic passes here as this is part of I-80, the route between San Francisco and Sacramento. Nice views of the Bay.
