As a retired science type, I love the redwoods. Typically, the groves anywhere near a populated area are ‘loved to death’. Not this group in late October on a Wednesday afternoon. Evidence suggests that keeping them largely hidden in the midst of the larger Lagoon Valley Park is paying off. This non-botanist noted that for trees in an urban area, they looked pretty healthy. We’ve visited almost all the groves in California. The Jack Hume grove doesn’t have the overwhelming wild ecosystem feel some of the bigger groves a lot further north have, but they’re still awesome. And they certainly lack the crowds we experienced at the areas closer to the coast. A very easy trail leads to them. The hardest part is figuring out where they are. Google Maps showed us where to park & where to walk.

What a beautiful secret in Vacaville, CA! A redwood grove, near Vacaville's Pena Adobe Park. Enjoy trails to bike, jog, walk, or stroll with your beloved pet (leash required). The hills, redwoods and botanical garden are wonderful. We saw giant hawks soaring above, so close you could see their enormous wingspan. Jack Hume Grove in particular is named after a Vacavile native who co-founded Basic Vegetable Products Co. The entire area is managed by the City of Vacaville and the Pena Adobe Historical Society. There's also a historic cabin structure and museum that offers regular tours. It is a California Historical landmark which was the former home of the Pena family, one of the first group of settlers to arrive in Solano County.

Hiking in and around the park I came across a wonderfully beautiful patch of redwood trees. It was a blistering hot day. What a relief to get out of the sun and into some cool shade. The redwood trees completely block out the sun and you are in a little paradise with a stream of water from a spring running through the middle gives these redwoods a constant source of drink.I will never forget this beauty of this place.

We wanted to have a easy hike and it was. The highlights were the kites and heli-kites the water fowls. Just a lazy Sunday walk that was enjoyed in a clean and easy going area that was also right off Hwy 80.
