Lake Mendocino is located in the northern coast range of California where redwood forests meet the wine country. Created by the construction of Coyote Dam on the East Fork of the Russian River in 1958. The dam, built and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides flood damage reduction, water conservation, and hydroelectric power. The lake also provides many recreation opportunities.

I used to take the hiking trails to the north around the lake. I now find a bit more leisurely (but can be powerful) walk is by crossing the dam and heading up the hill and back. This year with all the great winter rains,...More

The lake level drops quickly after the rainy season but when it is full or nearly full the shore line is a great place to hang out. There are great picnic areas in the shade with nice views of the lake. Very scenic sunsets and...More

We hiked around the lake and played on the various playgrounds at the Observation Point/Boat Ramp area. Would highly recommend for a picnic. Great smell of Eucalyptus!

Beautiful lake, plenty of camping, several beaches, 2 boat docks and lots of fun fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, group activity or just a picnic, Lake Mendocino is a fun place to go. Have done all of these here and never disappointing.

We have used this campground once a year for most of 39 years. It is large enough to hold more than the 700 kids/staff we had. There were some issues that were worked out with the Rangers, the event was full of problems that were...More

I am reviewing the campground, not the lake itself. We stayed in the RV Park/Campground which was very nice for dry camping. There are no hookups at all. You must provide your own power. There is water available and restrooms as well. The campsites are...More
