What a delightful small museum packed with not only history of the Donner Party but of settlers coming to California and the birth of the intercontinental railroad with Centeal Pacific meeting up with Union Pacific at Promintory Point in Utah in 1869.

Even though reviews of this site were mixed, I decided to go as part of a planned day trip to Truckee. The park is a lovely drive (easy in good weather), with chances for frequent walks along the way. The outdoor memorial and related Donner...More

This memorial was certainly worth a visit! We were impressed with the displays, and the 30 minute movie should be a part of your visit. Really explains the journey and the difficulties encountered. If you have school age kids studying California history this will make...More

Highly recommend this stop along the highway. Worth the time to learn about this terrible point in US history and what the people of that time endured. Great exhibit.

We drove about an hour from our condo in State Line, Nv. to visit this moving bit of history. Having known part of the story, we wanted to experience this firsthand. The information and monument were sobering and almost like a place of worship, knowing...More

Depends on the weather and your ability to walk on uneven surfaces. Usually you can park near the lake, right off the highway.
