This trail can be a little tough. It will depend on how far you want to go. If you plan to teach Shirley lake, expect some steep areas. Once the rocks start, the steepness and no shade are begin. We did have to crawl up in all fours in some areas. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes.

We parked across from the apartment complex on the street. Our walked round trip took 3.5 hours, but that includes a good rest once we reached Shirley lake.

Along the trail, they have blue markings that lead the way up. On the way down, it’s a little more difficult to see the blue markings. We did get off the trail by mistake at one point on our way down.

We were disappointed that the Creek was dry (September) and that the waterfalls weren’t present. By the way, follow the Creek and it will lead you the right way.

Once we reached Shirley lake, we sat for a while and enjoyed the scenery. I’m not sure what kind of construction is happening, but we could see machinery and vehicles across the lake. The lake isn’t clear, but we saw dogs jumping in and having fun.

Take plenty of water and sunscreen. Consider a snack as well. Download their app. It will keep your hike via gps and guide you

Fascinating!!!
May 2019
Hiking on Shirley Lake trail was difficult, but worth it. The hardest part was inclined, as you climbed up on the rock hill area. Waterfall on the way was nice to see. After you reached the lake, you climbed up and take the cable car down----which was nice!!!

Amazing Trail
Jun 2019
I Hiked twice hopefully this beatifull trail, one time was in Summer and the last one ending winter, different seasons and for sure different landscapes, my friend and I was exploring the area because there are alternatives ways with signs. Short cascades and river you can see when the winter is almost done. The Lake is gorgeous and the long way to arrive worth it.

Great hike

This is a beautiful hike with lots of variety along the way.
We were surprised that it was so easy to follow.
Blue paint markings take all the stress out of this hike and once its dry the terrain is fine.
There is some scrambling required over granite boulders but its well worth it
THe lake is so tranquil and scenic.
Loved it

Fun hike with amazing views!
Aug 2019
My daughter and I are novice hikers from super flat Northern Indiana, so we are not experts on hiking and weren't quite sure to expect. That being said, we had an amazing time on this hike. There was lots of interesting terrain to navigate with amazing views at every turn. The hike was challenging but not difficult. We saw people of all ages (and dogs!) and fitness levels along the trail but it might not be fun for really little kids. We followed all the way to the top where there was a look out point and a museum commemorating the 1960 Winter Olympics. The tram ride was free on the way down which was an added bonus. It took us about three hours to make it to the top. Would definitely recommend giving it a try!

Beautiful spot with well marked trail . Parking required some creativity.. altitude makes you bumper breathless at times . Enjoyed the water and crossing small streams and many small to larger rocks, meadows to thick dark shaded forest ..great weather and lots of people so earlier is better and we didn’t go all the way to top.. we had a time schedule to keep . Love to go back and do whole trail

Worth every step. Moderate to difficult. Bring 2000 ml or more. About 5-6 bottles of water and handful of snacks. This is not for beginners. Parking lot to lake to high camp and back 5 hours.

LOVED this trail!

We hiked this trail in January 2019. Yes there was snow on the ground and plenty of it but we rented snowshoes from Mountain Mike's and it was an epic adventure. It took us 5 hours round trip and it is not for the faint of heart or someone with a condition. It is strenuous but oh so worth it for the views atop!

Easy.....or Moderate!

The Shirley Canyon/Squaw Creek/Shirley Lake Trail can be easy or not so easy. Hiking up the trail along Squaw Creek to the small waterfalls and places to go in the Creek is reasonably easy with some rock scrambling. This first part with nice creek and woodland views is beautiful depending on water quantity and not too hard. The rest up to Shirley Lake and the tram is harder with rock scrambles, up a huge granite slab and sun exposed. Not for smaller kids, who would enjoy the first part.
