I just sat down for a quick meal at a local McDonalds, a section of the Orange County Register newspaper had been left behind. I normally do not read this paper, but something caught my eye. It was story about a lecture the next afternoon, a Saturday, given about the history of surfing in Orange County. Just then, my schedule changed. I thought that this would be interesting to attend. It was one of those hot days that come unexpectedly. Found the location and after parking, walked into a world of my youth. Valencia Orange trees with fruit, a two story wood home, vegetable garden and more. Taking me back 60 years, to my Grand parents days in Anaheim, on the corner of Orange and Brookhurst Streets. Where they once owned a large Orange grove and Avocado Orchard. The Heritage Museum was filled with costumed actors, playing roles such as silver mine owners selling shares in their company, police and other officials. Oranges from the property were for sale at 20 cents each. Great taste, great value and an especially great treat. I highly recommend for an afternoon of historical celebration and remarkable fun.

I found this place because I took a wrong turn and seen a beautiful home tucked away, so I decided to turn around to get a better look. And what do I find?? A beautiful place of history tucked away and beautifully preserved! As you walk through the lovely iron gates, you are greeted with a giant shade tree, and your senses are so overwhelmed you don't know where to look first! To the left you find buggies, one a flat bed for carrying supplies and a few steps up, is the "Sunday" buggy. Straight ahead a beautiful white Victorian! To the right, a big purple Victorian! Oh my, what you can find when you make a wrong turn! After finding the "gift shop" and paying a very small fee, you can go inside the white Victorian and take a self guided tour. The history of the home is amazing, it is called the Kellogg house and was built in 1898, so make sure you talk to the volunteers who will tell you about the home. The Kellogg's who built this home were not the cereal Kellogg family, but they were related to them. These Kellogg's are the fertilizer people. As you walk through the home, make sure to look everywhere, because you will see history in every corner of the home. The home was saved by 2 teachers who loved the home and had it moved to it's current location in the 1980's. It is thought that this home may be haunted, so you will need to find out for yourself! The Maag Home, or the purple house, is not open for touring as it is currently being renovated. The Maag house was built in 1899, was saved from the wrecking ball and moved here from near a cemetery in Santa Ana. Unfortunately since the Maag house is being renovated, you cannot go inside. You will find a "barn house" a "motel", a working blacksmith shop, and lots of pieces of historical farming equipment. Wear some good walking shoes, and if you are up to it, you can even walk along the nature trailat the back of the property! They ask you not pick any of the fruit that is growing on the property, as it should be. Take some extra time and talk to one of the blacksmiths, it's extremely interesting, and maybe you can even watch some students learning to work with the hot iron! For history buffs, or even for those who want to learn some of the Orange County history, this is the place to go! Call ahead and see if they might have a docent lead tour, as they are dressed in period clothing for the tour. I found out they even have a Civil War day at this location, now that is pretty amazing! Or for you love birds out there, maybe you might consider having your wedding here! This is a beautiful location and a great way to spend some quality time. Thank goodness for my wrong turn!! What a wonderful day it turned out to be!!

This house is filled with items from the 1800's. The things were not original, but were interesting none-the-less. There were rooms downstairs and upstairs. There was no rail to hold on to so I did not go upstairs. I was able to walk around and take closer looks at the rooms and historic items, The 2nd guide answered many of my questions and explained additional things. They were very helpful when my sister did not feel well. Most local people do not know about this treasure and should. The grounds are lovely, too.

I visited the museum on a Sunday afternoon in 2016, but am unsure of the month. The only building of interest to me was the Kellogg House, which was nice to see how previous generations lived. Most of the other sites were either under renovation or didn't have much appeal. The Gardens were attractive and ideal for weddings. The Gospel Swamp...well... The visit was still a learning experience and for a free Sunday trip I couldn't complain.

The 12 acre site is about half buildings and half nature trail. There are two historic houses, a water tower, a blacksmith shop, and a few smaller buildings, some of which are for park offices. Between the buildings are gardens and an exhibit on old farming equipment. The Nature Trail isn't long or difficult and takes you past exhibits on mining and native people.

The docents are excellent. They know and retell the history of the Kellogg family and Orange County's history. You can explore their house, hands-on, your not behind a rope like other places, great for kids.

It was a nice park set up. We saw the Kellog house. The other house was under renovation. Very interesting small Victorian. Our guide was good at explaining how some of the upper class lived at the turn of the previous century. Admission is pricey, but there are senior citizen discounts. Special promotions for Santa Ana residents on the first Sunday of the month. Check out first.

Visited to see various areas, gave 4 stars because a map is needed and location of entrance is not near purchase of entrance fee to house.
House tour was explained by staff a door checking for hand stamp which was applied and purchased at gift shop (old well house). Great history of house and worth seeing.
Old stable has history trail maps of the 2 families presented here on the property. Blacksmith area had blacksmith working and discussing his work.
Continued on to the right down dirt road and looked at garden and implements. Stopped at far end because we did not understand what was next. Map or trail information is needed.
Take about 2 hours to see the area and worth your time

My daughter was married there on March 6th! The Caretaker, Jamie Hiber, was very helpful with organizing the venue, so when the wedding party arrived, everything went very smoothly.
The grounds were clean and there were several places to take photos! Very Nice!
