This free garden is a serene spot admist the sound of running water. Nice for a walking meditation. Interesting Japanese shrines from San mateo's sister city in Japan. The Central Park arboretum and rose garden are near by.

Since we have been in San Francisco's Japanese Garden and in Portland's Japanese Garden, we decided to visit San Mateo's Japanese Garden. It is MUCH smaller than the other two gardens, but STILL worth a visit.

Quiet, peaceful, relaxing place to visit and take photos. You can spend 15 min. or 2 hrs. Good place to watch the feeding of the Koi. Kids love it.

This Japanese Garden has it all - religious pagodas, viewing structures, koi fish, walking bridges, lush greenery and flowing waters. My pulse went WAY down when I walked into this place. I got easy metered street parking (bring quarters as the meters only take coins)...More

Lovely and free Japanese Tea Garden. Although much smaller than the one in San Francisco, it is free and great to walk through, read the history, and view large koi fish. Quiet and beautiful.

Didn't see this until another question was recently posed. Above answers are accurate. To paraphrase an old line... No service...but you can go shirtless and shoeless!
