You don't have to go to Gum Alley but if you do it: It's a very funny thing... gross and funny at the same time!
If you're in San Luis Obispo you SHOULD go there - if you're not in San Luis Obispo -there'sno need to go.

We read about this online when planning our trip to Cali. Since it came up as a must see and was only about 45 minutes from where we were staying we decided to see for ourselves. It is as gross as I expected, and not as colored as the pictures show. The old gum turns black (I've never had the need to think about what color old gum turns and I can't unsee it), it's super gross. Since we were there I made my family all put some of our dna on the way (3/4, my son would not give up his piece of gum). I only threw up in my mouth a few times, so you decide what to do with it.

It was ok. Most just gross. If you are walking by than you can stop but I won’t make it part of my trip. We did leave gum on the wall.

I heard about this and didn’t plan to go see it. I just happened to walk by it. Not worth making a trip to see unless you like to look at chewed gum.

Not something other places can claim to have. Most of the gum has been on the wall since the 90’s it definitely a funky smell in the area but that’s the whole attraction to this unique place.

Exactly what you expect but this isn't an issue!
An alley way full of gum, you can smell it! Worth a stop and a photo!
SLO seemed like a cool place to spend a couple of days as a side note.

One of the many pitstops on our road trip up the 101 was Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo.
Step 1: Grab a pack of Bubbalicious gum and chew up the biggest wad you can without choking on it.
Step 2: Find the Bubblegum Alley off of Higher Street in downtown San Luis Obispo
Step 3: Put your big chewed up wad of gum on the wall and forever know that you contributed to this masterpiece!
Step 4: Snap a picture or it never happened.

We took our four teens and they contributed to the wall and took photos. It was a fun, five-minute stop. They got a kick out of it.

Find it on Higuera St, between Garden and Broad, next to Blast 825 Tap room.
It's a fun thing to seek out and take photos of, you know pretending to put your tongue or your hand up against it. Don't forget to put your own glob of gum on the wall! It's somewhat unique, but other than that, there's not much to it.
We parked at the City of San Luis Obispo Parking lot and walked.

Yes, it is open at night. It is just an alley way between two buildings - open 24/7.
