Great church, and Judo Dojo

A very popular location with the locals in the heart of San Jose's historic Japantown, this is also a community center offering martial arts and cultural classes

Popped in for a service this morning. Really enjoyed it. It combines traditional buddhist service with hymn-singing in Japanese...! It was charmingly anachronistic, and I connected to the entire service through the english subtitles in the hymn books. Great for the person who enjoys learning about other cultures.

This is a wonderful church with gilded carvings, and Asian statues. If you call ahead a docent will give you a tour and history of this lovely building. It is the anchor of Japan town in San Jose which in itself is another wonderful walking tour. Restaurants, museums, and WWII history abound in this small few block area of San... More

It was a very nice piece of architecture and we are glad we stopped by for a couple of minutes whilst we visited Japantown. If you are like us and just want... More

We enjoy going to the Obon Festival at the San Jose Japantown Buddhist Church. It is a festival held in July each year. There is a lot of food, fun things to do, and other events. The entire community celebrates as part of the annual festive Obon Festival. The church itself is beautiful with nice gardens.

One of the largest Judo Shin Buddhist churches on the west coast. Lovely Hondo with rock garden outside. Visit during the first two weeks of July when they host a fabulous Obon Festival with dancing and traditional Japanese food. I also like to go to the New Year's service, where visitors can ring the church bell to drive away evil... More
