I highly recommend the Monterey Zoo. It is small and you can get up close and personal with the animals. Check the times of operation before going and reserve 1 1/2 hours for the visit. Also, consider having an event there. They have a huge...More

Stumbled upon these reviews to see if this zoo was still around. I came here years ago and I'm disappointed to see poor reviews. I've been to all the major zoos in southern CA, but this zoo was like no other. I always meant to...More

The Monterey Zoo has young attendants with first hand knowledge of the animals they have you meet on the tour. At the end of the tour (if you've paid the few extra dollars per person) you can hand feed carrots to elephants separated from you...More

We are sadly baffled as to why this individual rated our efforts with one star after authoring what we consider a very positive review. We fear it might have been an accident that unfortunately effects our overall score... Regardless, we will do our best to...More

We were staying in Carmel and looking to escape some grey weather - so we headed to Salinas to the Monterey Zoo. And I'm so glad we did. Right now, the zoo is under construction so you can only attend as part of a planned...More

The laws in California pertaining to our elephant's ability to physically travel to the bungalows changed in January of 2018. We notified everyone with reservations then. Notifying every reservation seven months later would be difficult if not impossible and it seems a bit unreasonable... especially...More

The workers seemed engaged and interested in their work. We had a short guided tour of exhibits on the lower level, including mountain lions, a bob cat, a hyena, and many more. Our guide, Jordy, was knowledgeable about the animals and their origins and did...More

First of all, the Monterey Zoo is in Salinas, which is an easy, 30-minute drive inland from the city of Monterey. It’s important to know the origins of the zoo in order to understand its facilities and its strengths and weaknesses. The zoo began as...More

The cages were small, however the animals were all out. Highly recommend the extra fee to feed the elephant. Well worth it. Would love to see this place once they get a little more experience and a few more exhibits.

We are although some exhibits and activities might be closed for the health and safety of the animals. It's all dependent upon how bad the weather is but we generally stop open rain or shine.
