Good wine and very reasonably priced. You need a reservation for tasting and we didn’t have one but they let us buy a glass of wine for $5. Most wines are $7 a bottle and they have lots of gift items to purchase. It’s a fun stop. Most wineries in Napa now want you to make a reservation which is annoying because it’s always fun to just check out a winery, find out the cost for tasting and then decide. Napa used to be fun but now it’s almost a chore to go there.

This facility was still only partially open due to Covid, not offering tasting without reservations and not providing tours of the winery. We were allowed to enter the gift shop and purchase their products which we did. The price of wine at this shop is quite good compared to regular liquor stores.
Even though we weren't able to tour the facility, we were quite happy we could purchase their products at a reduced price.

We had been passing the Sutter Home Winery several times while going to different wineries during the week we were in Napa. The sign always said "Closed". Finally, on Saturday (the last day we were there) it said "Open". We stopped in thinking since they had been closed for so long, people would not yet know that they were open, and we might be able to get a wine tasting without a reservation. At first we were told there was no way we could get a wine tasting without a reservation. They said the next opening was on Thursday. When we told them that we had to leave to go back home the next day, they changed their mind and said we could get a tasting immediately! We were very happy they decided they could accommodate us. After getting a normal tasting, we mentioned we would be interested in joining their wine club. After that, they gave us tastings of any wine that we wanted to taste. They didn't even charge for any of the tastings. We did join the wine club. They gave us a special price of $10.00 for shipping. Since we joined the wine club, we got the bottles we ordered at a discounted price, which made up for the shipping cost. We had been to a lot of wineries while we were in Napa, and all the other wineries wanted us to order more than $100 worth of wine, plus pay for shipping to join their wine club. Sutter Home charged us less than $60 for 8 bottles of wine, including shipping. We paid more than that for some of the wine tastings we attended!

Absolutely fantastic wine tasting at Sutter Home Winery.
To start with, the base tasting is FREE! With very, very reasonable upgrades (up to $10). Upgrades included sweet, dry and others... essentially a flight of tastings to suit what you like.
The staff let us taste in our own time in the garden with no pressure, no standing over us. They came and took the empties and refilled as well, no need to go inside. Bliss!
Garden themselves were stunning. Beautiful exterior along with a shaded gazebo.
Yuni was excellent, offering explanations to each glass and was extremely patient.
Also - you can buy small bottles to take away in plastic bottles! Can safely say they transport home absolutely fine :).
A must visit in Napa!!

Im a huge White Zinfandel fan, so a visit to Sutter Home winery whilst in Napa just HAD to be done. We had left everything quite late so couldn't get a tour, but instead enjoyed a lovely glass of the wine and sat outside in the grounds just enjoying the ambience.
The staff were really friendly and chatty, and the gentleman behind the bar took time out to have a chat with us about the process of the wine making.
The wine was delicious and I am so glad I visited.

Beautiful grounds. Great for pics. Staff unfriendly and no customer service. The majority of the participants were disappointed. The staff stated that the bubbly Pink Moscato was only available at the winery which is false. We found offerings online. Bad experience.

My wine snob friends and I went here on a dare but we ended up having a really fun time! I feel a little bad that I was making so much fun of this winery because now I think this place should be on everyone's must-stop list, especially if you are new to the whole world of wine tasting. Yes, Sutter Home wines are cheap. Yes, their wines aren't super fancy. And yes, you will probably be mocked by your serious wine buddies when you speak up and say you want to taste here. But you know what? Who cares?! Just go! In the words of my favorite band Weezer, "I don't give a hoot about what you think!"
Sutter Home white zinfandel was my "gateway" wine in college; it's all because of that one wine that I am now a serious wine drinker and collector. Even after over two decades, I can still open a bottle of Sutter Home white zin and enjoy it immensely! It's still an easy-drinker after all these years (and you can't beat the bargain price)!
Tastings are FREE at the winery, something that is unheard of in the Napa valley nowadays. The hosts at the tasting bar were super friendly and welcoming, and I really enjoyed the easygoing, neighborly atmosphere. No appointment is required; you are invited to come as you are. No snobbery or pretension here, everyone is welcome.
The tasting menu (you can select 4 to try, but it's easy to sweet talk the employees behind the counter for a few extra tastes) had a nice variety of easy drinking wines that are sold exclusively at the winery (the sparkling white zinfandel was very good and was priced at around $12 per bottle). Get over yourself if you think you are "too good" to drink Sutter Home wines.
Now that's not to say that there weren't quite a few stinkers on the tasting menu; I found the reds undrinkable across the board. Nasty! Best to stick to what they do best: white zinfandels (you'll even find a reserve on the tasting menu, and it's pretty good as well). Everybody's a wine critic and it's a little unfair of me since I like big, bold, lush cabernet sauvignons. I say drink what you like, even if you like wines that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. (But PLEASE do not refer to regular zinfandel as "red zinfandel." No, no, no, no, NO! Just DON'T DO IT)!
If you are interested in belonging to a wine club, Sutter Home offers the most affordable one I have ever seen. They even have a nice little private bar area for club members. Tasting room hosts always push the wine club and I tend to tune them out, but this club seemed to have lots of fun events and what-not. Not for me, but it may be worth a look if you are new to the wine world or you really like their wines.
Also it's worth mentioning that this winery has the best gift shop in town. Lots of fun little wine-themed hostess gifts, cute shirts, tote bags, cookbooks, picnic supplies, specialty foods and sauces, drinking glasses and more. A great place to shop for yourself or your wine drinking friends. The winery grounds are lovely too, check out the grassy area and the historic house with a lovely rose garden.
Since white zinfandel is such a popular pink wine, this place is in SUPER high demand by cackling bachelorette parties, "wild girlfriends' weekend" cliques and the ubiquitous drunk buses (er, I mean wine shuttle tour buses). Just beware and prepared for this if you stop by. The number of ginormous motorcoaches in the parking lot is your first clue as to if you want to stop and go inside or keep driving down Highway 29.
If you are hanging in the valley with your girlfriends, if you are a shopaholic looking for cute wine country souvenirs, or if you love and purchase Sutter Home wines with regularity, then by all means make this a must-stop destination! If you are a wine snob like me, it might be worth checking out on a dare -- but you could just as well be as surprised as I was with how much fun I had here. Loosen up and go.
This isn't the type of winery you want to take your friends to if you're trying to impress them (nor is it the type of wine you'd want to take to a fancy dinner party), but it is a great "starter" place to learn about the world of Napa wine tasting. For all these reasons, Sutter Home has earned a 4 star review from me!

This was easily my favorite stop in Napa Valley. It's basically a large shop with three tasting options. One was a free tasting with a good variety of 4 different wines, one was a list of 5 sweeter wines for $5, and the final tasting for $5 was a variety of specialty wines. Outside, there is an inn restricted to inn guests only but we were able to sit in the picturesque gazebo, explore the small rose garden, and check out the lovely koi pond. We decided to pop outside between each of our pours but you can park yourself inside for your tastings as well.
Shout out to Yesica who helped us with our tastings and was super helpful, informative, and friendly! She was key to our great visit!
The shop itself had a great variety of wines for purchase, including the Sutter Home mini bottles that I love! They had a couple packs of 16 mini-bottles-they should sell these everywhere! We opted to buy a regular bottle and build a couple 4-packs of mini bottles mixing and matching our favorite wines. We had just as much fun shopping as we did tasting.
Overall the vibe at Sutter home, is very comfortable, casual, and fun. We enjoyed ourselves and would definable recommend and return!

Our last stop that day at Napa valley. We found the wines very good, reasonably priced, and the tasting fee very reasonable too. Staff was polite and attentive. They have a good souvenir shop too.

I was surprised on how much we learned here. Definitely worth it. Yesica was very passionate about what she does. She made our experience great and we learned a lot about this family business. 100% recommended.

Has anyone been here since all of the wild fires?? Is this winery still good?
Written 21 November 2017
We were there in Sept. and of course all was good. I have heard that the fire didn't get to Napa Valley. The fire was in Santa Rosa but I really can't say for sure. I would call the winery.
