I ride my bike on this parkway 3-4 times/week even in the winter. It is a wonderful, well-maintained place to exercise. The only times I have felt slightly unsafe is in the area near Discovery Park. There are homeless camps in that area along the river and it is wooded. Otherwise the rest of the trail is full of families... More

I think this is the best, unusual, thing about Sacramento. Within feet of the busy city there are 30+ miles of green space with turkeys, deer, Coyotes, rattle snakes (sorry), salmon in season and NO CARS. You can run, walk, cycle, fish, etc

ARP is a paved trail that almost always has a view of the American River. The view is lovely! When the weather is good, it can get very crowded, so one must be alert for speeding cyclists. I would have given the American River Parkway a higher rating, but the lack of dirt trails and crowds of speeding cyclists can... More

The parkway stretches for 30 miles with many entrances along the way. The most popular entrances are at Discovery park or Ancil Hoffman park or Folsom Damn. Most of the parkway is very serene with occasional views of the river. The best way to experience the parkway is on a bicycle although there are many pedestrians on the path. Weekend... More

I've spent probably YEARS of my life riding up and back on the bike path. It is like taking a step out of the urban environment into an ever changing reparian wooded park. There are water fountains along the bike path so you don't have to bring tons of water. Other large family parks pop up along the way. Those... More

We go here once a week when we can for plein air painting. Or bird watching, or just hiking. In spring, there are wildflowers. In fall, salmon. You might even see an otter or a beaver, or even a coyote (watch your small dogs!). There are lots of opportunities for picnicking, too. If you plan to go more than five... More

This is the number one bike/waking/jogging/discovery trail in all of the western United States. There are a ton of things to see on this trail. The path that extends about 25 miles from the Dam to downtown Sacramento is well paved and has easy access to the river. I don't know of any safety issues, but you should always be... More

This is absolutely beautiful. Here in Sacarmento area, a parkway is a park, not a road for cars. There's bicycle path, dirt running/walking paths, bridal paths, wild life areas, all protected and beautiful. Includes bathrooms and drinking fountains. Y

Everytime I ride or walk on the American River Parkway I want to hug the people who had the foresight to create such a recreational treasure. You can ride your horse or bike, walk or run from Old Sacramento to Folsom Lake. The speed limit is 30 mph for bikes, but avoid the morning hours if you are on a... More

Can anyone ever tire of this place? During summer, watch for ticks as the deer are everywhere! Rattlesnakes can also be a problem. With this said, access is easy from many locations, and wildlife is abundant. Long lenses are recommended as animal life is best observed from a distance to reduce contact. Some critters do come near, be careful. Bobcats,... More
