A really nice museum that is fitting for a city that is rich in railroad history. Centrally located to downtown "Old Sac" makes this a convenient stop when you are out doing the touristy stuff. Plan for maybe an hour to two hours to pass...More

It's not just about trains! It's California history. We began our visit watching an introductory movie, then joined our docent Jack immediately after the film for a 30-minute guided tour/overview of the museum. He was excellent. If only he'd had a lapel mic--we sometimes missed...More

Took 4 year old granddaughter here since she loves trains. She liked it, but wanted to ride the trains, not look at them. Grandpa and I enjoyed looking at all the exhibits. Truly enjoyable. They had a play area for young children, and that was...More

Great fun for the entire family. The railroad museum will walk you through rail history all the way through the trans-continental railway through modern times. See all sorts of rail cars and engines from era's past.

What a great museum. Your kids will love it!! Hours of entertainment. Great location in Old Sacramento so if you haven’t had enough walking it’s a must to take a lap around. Great places to eat and drink cocktails.

Yes this museum is massive and all indoors. The area where the actual trains are is kind of like a huge garage/warehouse type of structure, but again it is all enclosed. I have visited more than once in the winter and don't... More

No, this museum is not a working railroad. However, the Amtrak to the bay is located about 1/2 mile from the Museum...and that will get you to/from SF in one day. Uber/Lyft from museum to Amtrak is only $7!
