We stopped in Sacramento on our way to Tahoe. The atmosphere in the old town is worth the stop if you have never seen it.

My husband and I spent 2 hours walking around this historic district. We had fun people watching and browsing the shops, some very unusual.
Nice looking buildings, although you expect a more preserved sidewalks and areas outside the buildings. Lots of tourist traps and souvenir shops but some gems in between. Don't miss the candy stores, best salt water tuffy I tasted in a long time.
