- Alexandra R22 contributionsRelaxing ShopA fun and relaxing way to spend the day. The architecture is beautiful and there are so many fun stores, from costume shops, food, ice cream, candy, specialty olive oil, jewelry, souvenirs, and so much more. Come on a weekday when it's not to crowded and it's nice an sunny. Stroll along the boardwalk into all the shops, and walk along the river.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 April 2023
- adventixBoston, Massachusetts1,648 contributionsA fun visit to the past of the WestThis is a really fun walk for the entire family. Lots of old historic buildings and relics. There are plenty of places to eat and also dessert places. You can also visit the California State Railroad Museum at the end of the road. Public restrooms are available. Parking with street meters up to 2 hours. Notice that meter maids are walking around the whole time, so don't let your time run out and hope for some leniency. They will ticket you.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 July 2023

Fun shops, interesting museums and exhibits. We spent a couple of hours in the area browsing and touring around the cobblestone streets and wooden sidewalks.

This year we took grandkids there after Christmas but didn’t stay because too many homeless were there. Didn’t feel safe with little kids.

My favorite thing about this part of town is the railroad museum. Otherwise there are a lot of bars and restaurants and some nice old architecture. A little honky tonk, but that is OK.

Since we had a 2 hour wait for dining, we decided to walk around Old Sac. Not much has changed, but there is a new olive oil business there called, The Chef’s Olive Mix. What great was to spend time—tasting various infused olive oils and balsamic vinegars! The young lady working there was super helpful and knowledgeable about the products. I will definitely go back to that place!

We visited Old Sacramento at the start of our stay. Loved the olive shop and railroad museum. Got good information at the visitor's center. Enjoyed strolling through the streets.
The area does have a few unhomed people who were a bit "off" - one dressing and undressing on the street. We stopped at a saloon that was a bit tacky. We had a nice meal at the Rio City Cafe but nothing special.
Well worth a few hours visit.

We would like to visit Old Town Sacramento on Memorial Day, Monday 5/29/23. How can I find out if and when most of the shops open? If we arrive by 11 or 11:30am on a Monday holiday, will there be places to visit and things to do?

Am I the only guy reading this who's glad they didn't allow "steveyv0nneh" and his dog into a restaurant where I'm eating. Hey buddy, I like pets as much as anyone, in fact more than most. Our pets are our "furry kids" and very likely treated better than most human kids. But they do not belong in restaurants where humans eat. I don't get people like you, it's as though you think everyone should ignore their own preferences (and laws) by allowing you to bring you animals into a restaurant. If they're legitimate service animals (not "comfort aniamls") they are allowed in. If not, why don't you take your little buddy down to the animal shelter and enjoy a nice bowl of kibble together?

I agree with you .Dogs that are not "service animals" don't need to be inside at sit-down restaurants.
Some restaurants also have an outside dog-friendly "cafe area" that allows dogs. I personally feel that is all right.

Yes, you can walk around with your dog on a leash, however, you may not be able to take them in all shops.

We are going to stay at La Quinta Inn. I'm wondering if we will be able to walk down to the town.

It's about a 20 min. walk via a Riverside boardwalk.
7 min. drive by car.
Walking during the day is pretty safe, but I am not comfortable walking it after dark.
Old Sac itself is beautiful and safe at night.

We will be visiting Sac on December 26th? Where is parking available and how much does it cost?

There are two parking structures on two ends of Old town. Then there is some street parking in old town. If you do not want to pay and still park for a while, then park on the other side of the river on the streets (office areas) and walk across the golden bridge to the river. This is not like a major city where parking is pricey everywhere.. just need to walk a few blocks and you will have free parking. (but not on the same side of the river on the old town side)
