It's my tradition to hike up to Mt. Wittenberg at least one every time I come back to Pt. It's about 45-50 minutes straight up, but the view is worth it-and getting that much exercise balances some of the abundant dining in town as Point Reyes Station is a foodie haven.

This is a quick (I think about 1 hr up, 1 hr down..or slightly more) from the visitor center to top of Mt Wittenberg. You can also do this to "almost" the top (because the summit has no views now that all the trees have grown up). You can hike to a broad plateau and enjoy the flowers, some ocean... More

From the Bear Valley trail-head you can pick up a simple free map at the ranger/info office and navigate the trails easily. Its about a 1400 foot elevation gain and mostly shady. It meanders thru lovely forest trails with evergreen conifers all around! There is potable water at Sky Camp so you can refill there if you didn't bring enough.... More

If you leave the Bear Valley Visitor Center and hike about 1/4 mile, there is a trail straight up to the top of Mt. Wittenberg. It's steep, but in 45 minutes you'll be treated to a breathtaking review of Drake's Bay and will feel justified to fest on popovers at the Station House or artisan pizza at Reyes Cafe

The view from atop is wonderful and makes the trek upward well worthwhile. In late July-mid August, bring a bucket to fill up with delicious huckleberries found along the trail.
