- carlotaTravel4fun650 contributionsBeautiful, relaxing afternoon at Calcareous WineryDon't be discouraged by the road to this winery. It is worth the trip. It is only about 5 miles out of town, but the road is narrow and winding. We did not have reservations, but we were shown to a table on the patio area overlooking the valley and hills. We were not at all rushed and given tastes of their product by a very knowledgeable young man. You can also order food to compliment your tasting. A very pleasant afternoon.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Richard v3 contributionsIf you had to choose one.If you had to choose just one winery that perfectly captures the essence of Paso Robles wine country, this is the one. They offer high-quality wines, excellent tasting room service, cuisine par excellence, and an astounding view on a manageable scale. This is not a mega-crowd winery; instead, it's quaint in an "old Paso" way. Five stars for the best wine in the Paso District.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 November 2023
- MaryBluEyesTraverse City, Michigan1,721 contributionsGood wine with even a better viewMost of the tastings here are done on the beautiful outdoor patio where you can see the town of Paso Robles below. We had a reservation but arrived almost an hour early from another and they accommodated us with no fuss. Our server was Bri and she walked us several wines with no rush. It was a gorgeous day and we ended up spending about two hours tasting.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- Vern SKeller, Texas179 contributionsGreat winery experienceThis was a highly recommended winery and it did NOT disappoint!! First, the view was great - plus it was nice to have the sun out for the first time during our visit to the Paso Robles area. Second, the wine was great & reasonably priced! We purchased several bottles for shipment back home. Thirdly, the service was just awesome Dimitri (?) provided superior service the entire afternoon and we stayed and had lunch. Would automatically go back if we're in the Paso Robles region in the future.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2024
- Eileen S11 contributionsWorth a Visit while in Paso! The view and ambiance was wonderful. We had a lovely table overlooking the valley. It reminded us of northern Tuscany. The wine was delicious. We had a wonderful lunch and visit. We purchased several bottles to bring home. I was interested in the planting of the vines and our hostess brought over the assistant winemaker. Which was so lovely. I can see why this winery continuous to gain acclaim. Highly recommend a visit here on a trip to Paso!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2024
- Defygravity5Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom23 contributionsExcellent ExperienceThe winery was very busy when we arrived and even though we had a reservation we fell through the cracks and had to sit for quite awhile. What happened once the staff recognized the situation is a testament to excellent customer service, and really talented staff. A special shoutout to Izzy, our server who was knowledgeable, fun, interesting, and gave us an excellent tasting experience. Well done!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 June 2024
- Janet MCordova, Tennessee816 contributionsGreat Views and Excellent Food!Calcareous Vineyard was one of our favorite places to visit in Paso Robles. We make a reservation for lunch and wine tasting (allow at least 90 minutes). We asked to be seated at a table inside their beautiful glass-walled tasting room. We had a full menu of artisan lunch items available for purchase during our visits. While we were sipping on their award-winning wines, my husband and I shared a Devil's Canyon Burger ($26.00) and a Crispy Chicken Sandwich ($24.00) along with a Warm Demi Baguette ($10.00). The service, food, and staff were excellent. We brought four (4) bottles of their 2021 Estate Syrah ($60.00 each). We highly recommend this vineyard and their food.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024
- Colin FToronto, Canada1,267 contributionsA pleasant place to enjoy some time and wineLet's face it, the reason a lot of us ended up here was because Daou was fully booked. But you. know what? This is almost as nice. Calcareous has above average wines (the 2023 Chardonney was especially nice), a winery on a hilltop with a beautiful view and pleasant ambience. The server was also good. The charcuterie plate however was merely average. Some of the guests on this occasion were also boorish and I felt for the staff but they seemed to handle it with aplomb. With a little work, this winery could be exceptional and like a little slice of heaven.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 July 2024

The view was beautiful. Our server was just ok. The person serving the wines can make it fun or boring. It was pretty boring. Wines were just ok. The one I loved cost 100. I decided to buy it for my hubby but our server would not waive even one tasting fee! No extra pours really either! Maybe that one good wine I bought I think.

Calcareous is an interesting experience in the sense of each visit is a surprise. I wish it was always a good surprise, but it wasn't. The good: beautiful outdoor tasting/eating experience with a great view, fairly reliable wine quality. Now. The bad. Your reservation gets you a random table assignment that the staff is not really geared up to adjust. Is it bright sunshine and plenty of empty tables but they assigned you to the one with no umbrella? No problem, you are welcome to sit there and burn... Luckily an empowered person walked by and have permission to the hostess to adjust. You then sir there and watch people that came after get greeted and served before your are acknowledged. I admit that this is mostly probably a function of the hostess we had since others seemed to get plenty of service. We did end up buying wine but largely because of what we had before, not what we were shown.
For a lunch stop, their views and searing are great. They have a new chef that is, reportedly, developing a new menu so once that is done it may be a really good experience. For now, it is great views, a BLT, a huge charcuterie and cheese plate but not what it could be.
Advice: better than nothing but if you are looking for food, wait for them to figure out their menu. If you aren't looking for food, try one of the many other tasting experiences, at least till they get the bugs ironed out.

I had a very nice time here. The view truly is beautiful and I loved the outdoor seating with umbrella. I also loved the cheese tray which is offered with the wine tastings (for an extra cost). It made for a full experience. The wine was nice but the tasting felt more commercial than other places I visited, less intimate. Not a bad thing just a different vibe. I enjoyed my visit and would go back.

We have thoroughly enjoyed Calcareous wines as members since our first visit years ago. We visited again with our daughter this time. Wee have been sharing our Calcareous wines and stories of the beauty of the winery with her for the 8 years she was living out of state. Needless to say, no disappointments here!!! The personal attention, delicious cheese plate and fun gifts in the shop made for a memorable time.

Our first winery of the day, and what a way to start. They have a beautiful outdoor tasting area set up with great views of the vineyards. Very efficient and friendly. Got us checked in and seated quickly then poured us some wonderful wine at a very relaxed pace. Helpful, informative and attentive. Bought some of their excellent wine and would love to go back again.

I took my girlfriend here for a romantic day time date .We live local but we hardly do the winery thing on weekends due to the crowds ; but hey it was a 3 day weekend so we charged ahead and called an Uber to take us on a drive up to Lloyd's Lookout. We had a beyond killer lunch that came with wine and chocolate strawberries on Saturday. Erin and Bob Duffy both treated us well and we got to meet the chef who was super nice and her name is Destiny which was cool because so is my girlfriends! I am very impressed and I want to propose to my "Destiny" there . If you havent tasted the wine you are missing out people. Go see this place and eat the food . Epic service and Epic experience this weekend. Thank You

Just put it on your list. Winding road to get to the top with amazing views and great wines. Wine club offers great deals, too. The lovely grassy area outside was set up with shaded, COVID-distanced tables. The staff very knowledgeable and fun as well. Snacks didn’t disappoint. That’s what I remember- it was the last place of our winery tour so pretty lit by the time we got there, and Calcareous was worthy of being the final destination.

We're members here and try to pickup our shipments in person whenever possible. The grounds are quite lovely, tables and chairs outside where you can enjoy a great view of the valley! This past visit we came midweek and had the whole patio to ourselves to enjoy our tasting and lunch. There were some tastings held inside too due to yellow jackets, but they didn't bother us. Christian is knowledgeable of the wines and was attentive. Weekends are definitely busier but that hasn't affected service.

We’ve been visiting Paso Robles for years and Calcareous is one of our favorite wineries. The view is amazing, and the tasting room has always exemplified the friendly, laid back experience Paso is noted for and that sets it apart from its snootier - and more expensive - neighbor to the north, Napa Valley.
Our most recent visit, though, was so disappointing. No longer can visitors walk up to the bar and enjoy the day’s selection for a nominal charge while leisurely chatting with the person behind the bar. Instead you are greeted at the door, taken to a table, presented with a food menu, a list of the day’s pours (4 for $30), a price list of available wines and a wine club application. The vibe was rushed and decidedly more Napa than Paso which surprised us. And unlike many wineries that deduct the cost of the tasting from any purchase Calcareous makes no such offer. Further, some wines by the bottle are only offered to wine club members so there’s some pressure to join the club if you want the full selection.
The wines are still excellent, the view is still spectacular but we won’t be back. Instead we’ll visit other wineries in the area that still offer the welcoming Paso vibe along with excellent wines. Calcareous’ Napa experience in Paso was, sadly, a definite turn-off.

It's a 2 to 2.5 hour drive to Santa Barbara from Calcareous Vineyard. It's common to make a daytrip between Paso Robles and Santa Barbara, and is recommended that you give yourself the full day to do it. The drive is scenic, and both destinations are worthy of exploration.

I will be bringing three people but I don’t drink alcohol. Is there still a charge for me?
Written 9 April 2021

Good question! The tasting fees only apply to those who will actually be tasting the wines. There is a selection of non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase, along with a full seasonal menu of artisan lunch items. Tasting fees, the latest menu, and answers to other FAQs are available on our website.

Does Uber pick up at the winery without too long of a wait? And is there enough Verizon or Sprint cell coverage to hail an Uber without booking a driver for the day?
Written 1 August 2020
Probably. I didn’t make a stop here but was able to catch one to Niner, from Niner to Halter, and fortunately from Halter. Almost got stranded there but it’s out there, not as far as this place so you will prob be ok.

Yes! We are a family-friendly winery. We do ask that parents closely supervise their children in order to enhance the experience of other guests. Please include children in your guest count when making a reservation, as this will determine the size of your table. This policy may vary for special events. Please note that there is no longer a picnic area on the property, and Calcareous is not licensed to allow outside food, picnics, or outside alcoholic beverages on the property.

Do you need a reservation for lunch?

Reservations are definitely recommended for wine tasting and/or lunch. We are currently booking up 1-2 weeks in advance, most quickly on Saturdays and holiday weekends. You may add your name to the waiting list through our reservation system. For same-day reservations, please call (805) 239-0289 to inquire about availability. Since the start of Covid, reservations have been required at most Paso Robles wineries, so we recommend you plan out your itinerary in advance to avoid being turned away and to ensure that you're able to have a relaxing day in wine country.

Wine Country RV resort is the closest. Its very nice too and across from a water park. You can google them and find their site! Good luck!

Yes! The grounds outside the tasting area has great views of the valley and rolling hills. There are tables chair and umbrellas on the patio and a nice lawn for your baby and children to play. Dogs are allowed as well. Calcareous also serve food up to a certain time but you can bring a picnic and enjoy sipping wines in a lovely surrounding.
