We were in Palm Springs for the weekend and went out to ladder/painted canyon. Great time! Lovely hike! Super cool! Here are my helpful notes: - If you drive a non-SUV, be prepared to drive slowly on a 5 mile dirt road. We have a...More

Interesting scenic hike upand down a few ladders, through a some crevices and down onto the canyon floor. It was a lot of fun, not very difficult and great exercise. A great 3 hour tour.

This is a fantastic hike. It is remote and you have to travel down a very bumpy road to get there but it is worth it.

I had looked up Painted Canyon and noticed the hiking that included ladders throughout the hike. Wasn't sure what to expect, but visited there with 5 kids. (only 1 was mine) It was close to a 1 hour drive from our resort and the last...More

We usually do this hike at least once when we are in the Palm Springs area and have done it with kids as young as 6 years old. Make sure you have good walking/hiking shoes and lots of water. I don't know how many people...More

This is the third consecutive March break that my wife and I have spent in Palm Springs. The numerous hikes in and around Palm Springs are wonderful, varied and thus far we have not hiked the same trail twice. Our last full day included the...More

Good for kids, teens, and adults. Our second time through the canyon, we spent about 2 hours up and down, returning back down the ladder route. For a longer hike, take the loop and come back down the valley bottom. It's a bit of a...More

Hiked this today and I thought it would be helpful to give some directions because it is easy to get going on the wrong trail. There are lots of reviews here that tell you how to get to the trail head. But not too many...More

This hike took three of us just under three hours. The drive from Palm Springs was an hour ten. The dirt trail road was well sign posted and we found the car park area easily. We set off early from the car park (0815) and...More

This was fun and challenging! Be prepared for some climbs and crawling over and under rocks - and to squeeze between very tight rock walls. Our teenager loved it! The ladders are easy going up, but definitely more challenging coming down. Solid hiking shoes are...More

Is it worthwhile to drive through the state park?

I don't think this is a state park. Since there is no fee to enter Painted Canyon. There isn't anything to drive around. You actually park in a small lot and then hike around. If you are physically able, I would... More

Hi there. This hike looks amazing and my wife and I are interested, but we have a seven year old and a nine year old. They are good hikers, but I worry about the rope climb. Is the rope climb optional or is it a must on the climb? Has anyone done this with similar aged children? Thanks guys!

I don't know of any ropes on the main climb. All fixed ladders. The hike from the plateau toward the antenna towers and then back down the dry canyon is a bit of a slog so we usually just reverse our path back down the... More

My best advice is, if you have a smart phone with navigation system, just type in painted canyon as your destination. Took me right to the entrance of the hike. When you enter, you have two options. Left: will take you... More
