Bring food and warm clothes (it's a different temperature zone on the other side) and make a(n expensive) picnic out of it. It's worth doing at least once, even for those on a budget. They offer discounts for AAA members.

This was an amazing experience. Loved the beautiful walking trails and amazing views...even the tram ride itself is spectacular. Don't hesitate, you will love it!

I have been up the tram 4-5 times, great trails for walking at the top. Much cooler at the top so take a layer or two extra clothing even on warm days!

Not so much a review, but unless you check the website, hotels in the LA area have the brochures available without the warning that maintenance has closed the tramway for the entire month of September.

I think the previous answers will be very helpful for you. Check the website. I recommend if you're not hiking to go later in the afternoon to see the view going up, then come down at dusk to see the lights of the city.
