Honestly , It All depends.
If you are well-travelled and Poor urban areas don't scare you, Fruitvale (during day) is fine. You can get great Mexican food for cheap and the area is very colorful and lively. But as Namsmom pointed out, like any urban, less wealthy neighborhoods, there are some crimes around there. If you are getting out of bart and hopping onto Uber, you should be fine but you have to be aware of your surroundings and don't look and act the way that you standout too much.
If you want to play it safe, take the Bart to Rockridge , grab Brunch or Lunch with your friends in Rockridge . Its a wonderful (and extremely wealthy and safe) neighborhood with many great cafes and restaurants . then take the Uber to the temple. Temples area is safe, its in the hilly suburbs and there isn't much out there other than the temple .
