A small area highlighted by some good historic preservation. Pedestrian. Some good restaurants, mostly informal. A small market. The farmer's market, Fridays I think, is very popular. But don't go out of your way to visit.

There is a brewery tour you can get on in front of Pacific Coast Brewing Co in Old Town. You have to buy a ticket first. You visit 3 breweries around Oakland and other nearby cities. It included all of the beer tastings. It is a lot of fun.

I went over to Oakland on a Friday during my stay in the Bay Area. Old Oakland blew me away with how cool the architecture and the landscape was. Little bistros and shops in the area make the experience really authentic, and must see for any tourists in the area. Oaklands Farmers Market is every Friday in the Old Oakland... More

Came here mainly to visit the Farmers' Market which turned out to be good. Not too many stalls but they were enough. There were also a couple of tables and chairs at the center to eat or just to sit. There were various food tents from Indian to Vietnamese. We tried the latter but unfortunately didn't enjoy it very much,... More

Great bars, cool stores, and hip restaurants. I was very happy to be staying near this area during a conference. The Italian restaurant, Desco, was probable my favorite!

We took a short walk around the neighborhood after going to the Jazz performance at Ratto's. Great old buildings. It was only 3pm & just about everything was closing up. This area is probably more active during weekdays.

great place to eat and get a feel for Oakland - rustic not fancy - yet nice places to shop and look see. Not late night since not a lot of foot traffic.

Old Oakland is a blend of old and new. It has the historic feel of an old downtown with the buildings. The Swan Building with multiple restaurants as well as Taylor's Meats for pork products is a great place to check out. There are new stores being added to the area every day. It's vibrant, walkable and adjacent to Chinatown.... More

The architecture in Old Oakland is beautiful. My son, who is a mason, would love to just walk around, or look out the highest window, at the beauty of these buildings. The shops are fun to go through and well as tons of places to eat. Give yourself a little time to enjoy.
