Oakland Zoo was established in 1922 and is managed by the Conservation Society of California, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife both locally and globally. The Zoo is home to over 700 native and exotic animals. We're recognized for our outstanding animal care, particularly our elephant care program, and for our Leed-certified, 17,000 square foot, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital—the largest wild animal veterinary facility in Northern California. June 2018 introduces Oakland Zoo guests to an entirely new experience, California Trail, a monumental expansion will further our commitment to animal care, education, and conservation with a focus on this state’s remarkable native wildlife—both past and present.

My 22 month old loves to run around and see the animals. We LOVE LOVE LOVE the new gondola and California Trail. They have about 10 baby bison and baby grizzlies too. The space is expansive and the children's play area is clean and fun.

I visited here last week with family and was very impressed. The animals seem well cared for and had lots of room and "enrichment" objects. The chimp certainly loved his little shopping bag! It was nice to see animals I hadn't seen before such as...More

We took the Gondola up the hill to see the new California zone. It was too hot for us and too hot for the animals. Mostly they were off in the distance in the shade, or we never saw them. Down at base level we...More

The California trail finally opened. You must take the gondola to get there which is included with admission. The landing cafe still serves delicious lunches but the serving size has decreased considerably, making it less affordable for a family. The 10 inch individual pizza at...More

Zoo appears to have very good, natural settings for the animals. There is a nice gondola ride that goes up to an additional area that is to open in late summer 2019 for additional attractions. They have an attractive membership program for anyone that goes...More

If you mean rent, no, the zoo does not have wheelchairs for rent. However the trails are wheelchair accessible. They also off a cart tour of the zoo for $35 but you need to call and make a reservation in advance.
