Lake Merritt was created in the process of building the port of Oakland in 1870. It is an artificial “lake,” actually a “tidal lagoon” with loads of wildlife (WATCH OUT FOR THE AGGRESSIVE GEESE WHO CLAIM ITS NORTHERN SHORES). Next to the lake is “Fairyland”...More

The city did a great job of renovating the lake and surrounding area. It is great to walk around the lake or bicycle in the new bike lanes in the street.

Lake Merritt is almost an urban oasis with a paved path, birds, and great views. Since my last visit either the previous rainy day or the increasing number of homeless have contributed visible trash to the edges of this large lake. There are plenty of...More

If your from a cute lil town, you may be surprised by the natural setting of homeless encampments spread out, without a concern people still have soccer practice, visit fairyland, the bird sanctuary, walk or jog around lake. We did come across a needle on...More

Just like I remember when I lived in the Bay Area. This spot was a great place to hang out and catch up with friends. The late is amazing and filled with lots of activity. Love this spot.

Rented a verbose nearb.y and enjoyed the closeness of uncrowned nature, a nice walk around the perimeter of about a mile, the opportunity to sit at picnic tables and chat. It wa every nice break from the hustle of the city.
