Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

We were visiting Napa and having a cold beer at a local tavern and asked our friendly waitress if she had any recommendations on a winery. She asked if we enjoyed art?? I was a little surprised at that question, and she explained that Hess not only had great wine - but they had an awesome art collection. It sounded... More

Amazing to find such high quality art in such a location that is a bit challenging to access. Absolutely worth the trip. Quite an experience. Art lovers will not be disappointed.

We visited Hess last week when we were on our first trip to Napa. Had a great time, the art was an interesting addition to our visit. Somewhat unexpected benefit. Wines were fine and it was nice to buy a couple bottles on the way out. Everyone was friendly and the facilities were first rate. Well worth the trip.

We liked to experience just not wowed by the wine. Beautiful old buildings and neat courtyard. While most vineyards pour tastings of wine you don't by in a store, Hess just didn't live up to the price point of those selections. OK, just not great. Tasting room is big and no reservation was necessary. Drive to the location is neat... More

I was taken to Hess as a birthday gift from one of my friends. What can I say? Absolutely stunning. From excellent wine, beautifully maintained grounds, to incredible artwork, Hess offers it all. Definitely worth seeing if you're in the area or even if you're not in the area.

Impressive and bold art exhibit housed in beautiful, bright open building. Wonderful to see school children welcomed to the art gallery here for a school field trip. Sam our guide accompanied us through the works, and provided interesting anecdotes about the artworks. Wine tasting was impressive as some white wine choices were unusual for the region (eg Gruner Veltliner and... More

Tucked away in the mountainside west of Napa, this vineyard is something out of a fairytale at the dead end of a gorgeous road. Museum is cool. Wine is amazing. People are extremely friendly; tours are reasonably priced; no one is pushy. Loved it!

This was our first stop, and what a way to start! The grounds are gorgeous, and everyone is very friendly. Our "wine guide" was a teacher (like two of us) and was very knowledgeable about the wines and the area. We very much enjoyed chatting with her! The art collection is very modern and a bit outside of my taste... More
