Such a fantastic family outing just minutes away from home (Murrieta). Our family enjoys hiking the many trails anytime of year....but the Spring, especially after it rains, is magical on the Plateau! Vernal pools, fairy shrimp, spectacular wild flowers and if you're lucky , wild life ( we've seen coyote pups, snakes, water fowl, skunk, wild turkeys, and raccoon) are... More

The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve continues to impress me, year after year. Last weekend, my wife and I did a six mile hike there with some friends. At the vernal pools, we saw lots of frogs, and beautiful ducks. On the path from the pools down to the Adobe, there were amazing blankets of freshly blooming poppies.

The Santa Rose Plateau was settled back in the 1840s by a rancher who received some 40K acres of land from the Spanish governor. The adobe ranch house is still there, as are some of the out-buildings. The place was a cattle ranch. Today, it is a refuge for coyotes, bob cats, hawks, the occasional mountain lion, and any number... More

The Santa Rosa Plateau is a beautiful area. Relatively easy hike on well-marked trails made for a really fun day with friends. Quite a few opportunities to have lunch on benches with really pretty views. There isn't any water and it can get pretty warm, so make sure you come prepared. Worth the effort for sure!!

A great place for a hike. Easy trails even for those 60+. We saw people of all ages, even people pushing strollers. If a hot day, you'd get very hot as there is little shade.

I've lived in Murrieta for 20 years, and never get tired of visiting "the plateau." If you park at the main visitor entrance, there is a large building with exhibits that are interesting for young and old alike. You can literally do anything from a half mile loop, to a 20 miler, on hilly but not steep terrain. If time... More

Whether your hiking or biking the trails are easy to moderate and a lot of fun. My wife and I have been numerous times and we always choose a trail that we haven't been on in that season. The reserve is beautiful all year around but be sure to watch for snakes and bring plenty of water.

No mud. No bugs. yes, wear boots because of possibility of rattlesnakes. I had planned to only hike 2 or 3 miles, but it was so beautiful that I hiked up to the vernal pools. I got a map and information from the visitor center. Then drove short distance to Hidden Valley Trailhead for a hike to the wildflowers and... More
