- Oakley92Anchorage, Alaska11 contributionsBeautiful facility, best aquarium experience ever!Great experience for those interested in aquariums. Not really a huge fan of aquariums but this one kept me engaged. The facility is impressive, clean well organized. A great educational experience on aquatic life, preservation & our environmental responsibilities.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 10 December 2022
- mayam7777Oakland, California51 contributionsMusic and mesmerizing sea creatures = another worldI honestly, am someone that is very much against going to aquariums or any type of museum that has animals in it. But I won’t go into much detail about that since this is a “review” of a location. I was very hesitant about going to this aquarium, just for the fact that it is an aquarium. But wow, when I got into some of the exhibitions, for example when I saw all the beautiful Jellifish and seeing the sea creatures in the “Into the Deep” and seeing another section that had the dea creatures that you don’t use flashlight for your camera because it’s a dark space they need and also seeing this long glass that is divided into 3 sections, and for each of these exhibitions they had music playing that was something that took me into another world. I fell in love with the sound of the music and seeing these sea creatures that are mesmerizing. I felt for a kid like a second and I wanted to stay at these specific exhibitions. And now finding that Monterey aquarium has their own YouTube with the relaxing music and jellyfish swimming makes me want to go back to that moment I had at the exhibition. These sections of the aquarium are the only reason I would go back to the aquarium. I hope to see more sea creatures that are deep in the water or more types of jellyfish in the future when I come back. I even want to come back by myself so I can take all the time in the world to be there. <3Visited December 2022Written 12 December 2022
- Jeff RSacramento, California1,070 contributionsFun and EducationalThis is the best aquarium we've visited. They are updating and improving exhibits. We hadn't been in a while and noticed several impressive changes. The new Open Sea exhibit is incredible with pelagic animals like sharks, rays, tuna, Dorado and schools of sardines. So much to see and do with rescued sea otters, penguins, deep sea exhibits and so much more. The on site cafeteria has been updated and is very nice. Visit and enjoy.Visited November 2022Written 15 December 2022
- MeganLAMCalifornia174 contributionsPacked Like SardinesThe aquarium looks nice & kept up. Staff & volunteers were helpful. I didn’t see much though. It is so crammed packed full of people. Strollers everywhere, screaming kids, pushy adults. It wasn’t fun. The restroom had a 15 min wait. I don’t think I’ll go back but it would be nice on a “slow” day. Currently they are letting way too many people in. The experience was poor at best. Raise the price and let fewer people in.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2022
- Tommy599Two Rivers, Wisconsin873 contributionsWish we had a couple of extra hours to visit within our tour group limitationThe waterfront area known as Cannery Row, was the Sardine Capital of the world, with the fisherman taking almost all the sardines out of the deep water (underwater canyon goes down over 5,000 Ft). Today all the abandon cannery fishing buildings have been turned into hotels, and the BIG sardine processing plant has been turned into the Monterey Bay Aquarium. YOU NEED A FULL DAY to enjoy all the features of the Aquarium. Tickets are only Available on line, which we did just outside the Aquarium entranceVisited May 2022Written 29 December 2022
- AIR. LAND. SEE...United Kingdom51 contributionsUp there with the bestI've been lucky enough to visit many aquariums and Monterey is up there with the best! We spent 4 wonderful hours in the aquarium. Highlights included the kelp forest, the giant Pacific octopus and feeding time with the sea otters. Going outside, the chance to see seals and sea otters in the wild from the deck and through the tower viewers is amazing. The history of the canning factory display is also worth a read. Every section is a joy and I can't recommend it enough!Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2023
- TravelFun_seekerz12 contributionsGreat family trip to the Monterey AquariumLove this place! Sure there's enough to complain about but we're lucky to have such a great experience available. Get the complaints out of the way. Yeah, it's kinda expensive. Can be really crowded. The constant game of bumper-strollers is annoying. Some of the stuff is once in a lifetime to see yet the kids complain of being bored after a couple hours... but it is what it is. Positives, it's just a really special place to see. I appreciate their focus on sustainability; the Seafood Watch cards are educational and convenient. The tanks are amazing. I could sit and stare at the deep water tank all day long. The docents are all very helpful and eager to answer any questions. The folks doing the presentations at feedings are very enthusiastic and engaging for the kids. For the cost you want to get in all you can see before the kids get whiney. Plan ahead. Arrive at opening and then move around with the Daily Schedule. We caught the otter feeding at 10:30. Kids loved how the otters come right up to the glass. Made our way over to the Deep Sea feeding at 11:00 and that was my favorite. It's amazing to watch the giant swarm of sardines swimming around and feeding as a group. Highly recommend. The kelp feeding was pretty cool, but the kids were more interested in the touch pools on the 2nd floor. Overall a must-do experience. It didn't look like much of a cost-premium to upgrade from a single day ticket to a season pass but I don't know if its a trip we'd do more than once every year or so.Visited February 2023Written 21 February 2023
- PastyPersonSacramento, California176 contributionsA Must SeeThis Aquarium is a love letter to California's coastal regions. Everyone who works or volunteers here (and they have a LOT of dedicated volunteers) is enthusiastic about preserving the Monterey Bay and incredibly knowledgeable about the local environment. When you go, try to sign up for the "Behind the Scenes Tour" - our group was led by a knowledgeable and very engaging volunteer. Enjoy!Visited February 2023Written 2 March 2023
- PriceTheOrgan234 contributionsStill one of the best aquariums in the worldMy wife was keen to revisit this having been 20 years ago. The otters were still utterly enchanting and the other displays/shows informative and well designed. Definitely a great way to spend 3 hours in Monterey.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2023

This is a very nice modern aquarium with a special focus on education of children with places where you can touch animals from the sea but also simplified explanations. All areas are very well kept and clean. You can also stand on the verandas and observe sea life outside the aquarium e.g. sea otters, seals, birds etc

The aquarium is nice. The jellyfish were awesome to see. The puffins were great. The penguins exhibit seemed small. It was a nice place to spend a few hours, but for the price I was expecting more.

A fabulous aquarium with some stunning exhibits. We really enjoyed the jelly fish and the "Into the Deep" area. As well as all the different zones, tanks, feeding times etc, there is a programme of free talks throughout the day in the auditorium. We went to a couple and they were very interesting. Yes, it's expensive, but it was a highlight of our trip to the west coast. The day we went (a weekday) the aquarium was very busy with lots of children on school trips. If you can, I'd suggest getting there at opening time to try to get ahead of these groups! Cafe could do with more variety, although I did have a very tasy donut.

I squawked at the $60 per but so glad we went. The jellyfish exhibits were my favorite but the 2 story high aquariums of local waters and of ‘the deep’ were right up there. Head out to the viewing decks & look for shiny round heads to spot harbor seals.
We’ll be back!

One of the best aquariums we’ve visited. Parking was a little difficult as you have to find a public parking area along Cannery Row. Not a problem at all, just should have researched a little before trip.

The aquarium that started a trend. Converted from a defunct sardine cannery. I have visited at least 6 times and never get tired of it. Normal hours are 10 to 5. Not cheap! General admission is $60 and $50 for seniors. Plan on staying all day. Nice cafe but very expensive. Tip: Fountain drinks ($6) can be refilled all day unlimited if you have your cafe receipt. Tip #2: Park free on Ocean View in the area around 3rd St past the meters.

Where do I start?
My husband and our 19-month-old son visited the aquarium while staying in Monterey.
The Monterey Bay aquarium is amazing interactive space that showcases Marine Life in a thoughtful way that caters for all ages.
Not only did my son thoroughly enjoy himself my husband and I had an awesome experience. That we will not forget.
If we return to Monterey from NZ, we will definitely make the time to visit the Aquarium again.
Highly recommend you make a visit to the aquarium no matter your age.

I’m writing this review mainly because I don’t understand the glowing reviews. It’s very small for the cost. Yes, they have a very large kelp forest, but that’s kind of only cool if you’re an aquarium nerd so my teenager who takes aquarium science at her school and wants to be a marine biologist loved this place. The rest of us were extremely underwhelmed. We spent a fair amount of money to get from San Francisco to Monterey and then a lot of money to get in and it was not worth it. We lost a whole day of our vacation. Thank goodness the whale watching tour we took down there was amazing. It saved the day for us.

I have a 5 year old. How long, typically, does it take to see the aquarium? I realize each person is different. Just trying to get a general idea to plan our day. Thanks!

Depending on your little one’s attention span, you can stick to the sections with live animals rather than the ‘shows’ with narration. They should love the otters, more entertaining than the penguins.
On the whole two hours should be sufficient. No matter how much or little you see you and they will love it!

strollers, yes. Unfortunately we did see the wagons, too. It is a very tight space with many visitors--leave the wagon home!

Their website says they open at 10, but do they start selling tickets prior to 10 am? Driving down from San Francisco that day and trying to decide how early we need to get there.

Booking online is the easiest way to get tickets. Otherwise you will be waiting in line. We got there at 10 and they line was long and moved pretty quick.

Should I buy tickets prior to visiting Monterey aquarium ?? I noticed that you aren’t asked for a specific date that you want to visit ?? Are the tickets valid for any day at any time ?? I don’t want to spend $150 then not be able to get in due to capacity issues. Thank you

When we brought tickets in advance they were for specific dates. We were advised locally (on the Monterey Peninsula) to be at the Aquarium when it opened (9:30) because it got crowded FAST. There was a modest line already by 9:00 of people waiting to pick up their tickets from the 'will call' ticket booth. The situation is all-around best if you arrive before opening and already have your tickets in hand. That way you skip the secondary lines on the inside of people picking up tickets or trying to purchase tickets. Also, there is NO parking specifically for the Aquarium. There is a nearby City of Monterey parking garage that charges $18/day WITH NO IN&OUT PRIVILEGES! The least expensive parking is on the street, in metered locations good for 2 hours at a time. We were lucky and found one right outside the Aquarium and I went out twice to extend our parking period.
