Lotusland is considered to be one of the top 10 botanic gardens in the world. Situated in the foothills of Santa Barbara, California, this 37 acre botanical wonderland is home to more than 3,000 different types of plants from all around the world. The estate gardens were created by Madame Ganna Walska, who owned the property from 1941 until her death in 1984. Lotusland is home to several extraordinary plant collections and around each corner there is the unexpected - a surprise of unique garden design and plant species. The collections include rare cycads that are extinct in the wild, an unparaleled cactus garden, palms and euphorbias like most people have never seen. Additional gardens feature ferns, aloes, lotuses (bloom only in the summer months), water lilies and bromeliads. Lotusland horticulture philosophy is organic, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Reservations are required to visit. Tours are Wednesday - Saturday at 10 AM and again at 1:30 PM. Open Mid February through Mid November.

If you want to visit lotusland, you need a little bit of planning, you can't just arrive and see the site. Lotusland only allows guided tours twice a day (i think wend to sat) and you have to pay for it about $40 via phone. They're a little strict, there is NO refund even if it rains. If you purchase... This is a paid, 2 hour, guided tour through a wonderful garden. There are actually several themed gardens- such as cactus and topiary gardens. This was once a personal property. The main residence is usually closed but is currently open for a neat bird themed art show. They actually have an aviary where birds can land on different instruments and... More

The volunteers/staff at the entry gate were quite odd but the docent that gave us our tour very delightful and knowledgeable. This is a garden that all visitors to Santa Barbara who enjoy Mother Nature should visit.

This was the purpose of my trip to Santa Barbara and it was well worth the journey. This garden is incredible. It has a great selection of cacti, palms, and succulents. They are planted in large masses to inspire and create unique viewing points. There is also a nice Japanese garden. The house, not open to the tour, provides a... More

Not a typical garden! Lots of drama and really interesting to go through with a guide and learn. Highlight was all the cacti. Also loved the giant shells. Don't go if you're just looking for lots of flowers.

What a beautiful venue. The woman that designed the gardens thought of everything and was an interesting character. Our guide Jeri was engaging and VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE. All of the docents/guides receive extensive training and it shows. Each garden had a different theme and no expense was spared by the original owner of Loutus Land. There were plants I had never... Best toured with a guide (they are so knowledgable- esp Lori!). Be sure to set aside 2+ hours. Interesting collection of plants, many rare species, from all over the world displayed in 37 acres of beautifully maintained and distinct garden settings. Story of the woman who created Lotusland, Madame Ganna Walska, just as entertaining!

The woman that had these gardens planted had eclectic and fabulous taste. No expense was spared in the design, from an outdoor ampatheate for private concerts, to a horoscope clock planted with different succulents, to the often photographed pool where the Lotus plants now reside. Every step was a beautiful photo opportunity. I went as a chaperone with a class... More
