Great walk on the beach

We stopped at Van Damme and enjoyed a walk on the beach. The coast has lots of boulders in the breaking waves, making it quite exciting.

We enjoyed a nice little hike from the Pygmy Forest into the redwoods...we got to the Pygmy Forest via Airport Road. No restrooms at the site. We enjoyed the boardwalk which then led to paths into the redwoods....quiet, beautiful...highly recommend if you're in the Mendocino area.

Stayed at the park on a road trip up to Canada and am so glad we did! Stopped and camped at site #27 for one night. Right on the river which was beautiful and a hop skip & jump across from the bathroom. The only problem was how hard it was to get our stakes into the ground (used our... More

I came to the park due to a recommendation from a friend. She said hiking the Pygmy Forest is a must do attraction. She was right. Finding the Pygmy forest itself can be a challenge. There are no clear signs for it at all. However, if you were to go to the State Park, see the ranger on duty and... More

We camped at the Van Damme state park for a couple of nights. The camping sites are like any standard camp site in a state park. They have a picnic table and a fire pit at every site with a water source between sites. The bathrooms were clean and I was very surprised to find they had hot water there.... More

The Fern Canyon Trail was epic. We hiked about 10 miles round trip from the Hwy 1 entrance to the Pygmy Forest. The redwoods were majestic & awesome. The trail was passable although there were a couple of spots where fallen trees from this winter's heavy storms were not yet cleared. Highly recommendable for anyone who enjoys a moderate, beautiful... More

we enjoyed a nice stroll through the park with lovely trees and ocean view. Parking was a breeze, and if we had planned better we could have brought a snack and stayed longer.

We went to Van Damme State Park to see the Pygmy Forest and were disappointed to find the park closed for the winter. But we got lucky and a local told us how to get to the Pygmy Forest through the back entrance. Drive south from the Van Damme entrance on Highway 1. Turn left at the Little River Airport... More

Van Damme is a wonderful starting point for either calm river kayaking or the more dangerous ocean cave kayak outing.. We loved them both but the ocean not recommended by novices unless with a qualified guide

Breathe in all the oxygen and fresh air as you walk or bike up Fern Canyon trail, listen to the babbling of the stream, this is as picturesque as it gets in the redwood trees. As a word to the wise, parts of the upper trail may be closed during the rainy season as it gets muddy. Fantastic place to... More
