Neighbourhood: Hollywood
Hollywood undoubtedly conjures up images of movie stars and high-end lifestyles, and to this day, tourists flock here from around the world to see the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, Chinese Theatre and to catch a glimpse of the famed Hollywood sign up close. Celebrity impersonators and crowds give these areas the feeling of an amusement park while many clubs and hotels fill up around the weekends for late-night partying - the Hollywood club scene is a haven for thumping music and table-side bottle service. But parties aren’t the only way to enjoy this area, many visitors come to the neighborhood to sit back with a picnic to watch a performance at the Hollywood Bowl and those looking to stay fit trek along nature trails in the Hollywood hills and in Griffith Park.

Yes homeless people but this sadness is in every big city. LA had that special atmosphere and it is beautiful. Walked the blvd every evening as always something going on. Will be back. Didnt feel threatened (female and teenager visited)Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 September 2023
- karenCFCLondon, United Kingdom434 contributionsGood for people watchingWe like to spend time at some of the bars along the Boulevard, good for people watching. Cabo Cantina is a great place as you can sit outside. Really nice tortillas and dips. Just keep bags out of sight. Really great book shop called Larry Edmunds, which is worth a visit. I'm always amazed how clean it is first thing in the morning when they are washing it down. Avoid the guys selling CDs who try to force them into your hand as they are usually blank. Keep your wits about you.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- sharonkawanoVancouver, Canada158 contributionsNot what we expected. Not what we were expecting. Took our girls to Hollywood Blvd to check out the Walk of Fame. It’s completely NOT how it’s depicted in movies. Litter and homeless people everywhere. We couldn’t walk a block without being bombarded by people selling souvenirs and t-shirts. The only enjoyable part of this visit was Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Its the only place in Hollywood we recommend visiting, very fun and educational place to take the kids! 👍Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 September 2023

We began a splendid day on the Blvd with an early morning breakfast in the courtyard of the charming Chateau Marmont. Then joined Hollywood Blvd at Laurel Canyon and headed eastwards. In the glorious morning sunshine great vistas of palm tree lined routes were to be seen.
We took a detour along Fuller Ave to Runyon Canyon Park and enjoyed a stroll there. A brand of bottled water was being promoted close to the entrance and we gratefully accepted a few containers.
Famous for its theatres, we saw some of the best - Grauman's Chinese, El Capitan, Dolby and Pantages. At the latter we booked for a performance of Anastasia.
A delicious lunch was in California Pizza Kitchen, in Hollywood and Highland. From where we had great views of the Hollywood Sign.
We enjoyed a visit to Madame Tussauds where the most famous stars, past and current, are wonderfully portrayed. Along the Walk of Fame it was fun identifying so many of the illustrious entertainers from movies and music.
Close by is the Hollywood Museum in the beautiful former Max Factor building, where we spent an absorbing hour or so.
There are numerous lovely churches of various faiths along the thoroughfare. Some we visited included St. Thomas the Apostle, Mosaic, Hollywood United Methodist and First Presbyterian.
The final museum we toured was the Museum of Death, which we found quite engaging.

I had no plans to go to Hollywood on my trip to LA, but then I remembered I needed to go to the Hard Rock which is right in the heart of it. There are lots of tourist attractions down there. Madame Toussand’s, the Chinese Theater and the stars (on the sidewalk, not actual stars). There are also a lot of people trying to make a buck, be it impersonators or tour buses. It is a fun time but I wouldn’t linger. There are lots of better things to see and do.

It is just a street but the real thing about it is that you see the names and the stuff you've been watching on TV or in the bid screen since your childhood. This is more a historic place than a nice one, because it's always crowded and kind of dirty. However, you'll enjoy it because it has everything you've been listening about for years.

There is nothing glitzy or glamorous about Hollywood Boulevard. At first, the Walk of Fame is exciting and fun, but your attention will almost immediately be sidelined by homeless, drunk, and high people behaving outlandishly or aggressively. What you won't see on TV is how Hollywood is essentially the hood, with the streets lined with homeless people pitching tents. The nightlife only exists from Thursday to Sunday and the crowds aren't that great. Despite the strip being very hood, everything is obscenely high priced. It's worth a one-time visit, but don't bother procuring a hotel or AirBnb near Hollywood Blvd just for the strip.

The street is full of people who wear costumes to try to scam people by asking people to take photos together. There are so many people on the streets that it is hardly to slow down. You will be pushed by the crowd to keep moving forward. It is not recommended to go to Hollywood Blvd with stroller.

This place was a hell scape on a diabolical level.
The disparity between rich and poor was prevalent and obvious in every single way.
How can LA sit on their moral high horse, the hypocrisy of the reality of LA is physically disturbing.
Driving through LA I have felt safer and less upset in 3rd world nations.
This is literally the WORST place in the entire world.
It makes me feel bad watching movies knowing the complete disregard for human life Hollywood holds for the people of its city.
Rubbish everywhere, people sleeping rough all over. Smells like weed in every shop too,
LA get your act together, if I had my name on the walk of fame I would be ashamed.

Be prepared to see a bit of everything on Hollywood Boulevard! While there were lots of other tourists around, we saw our share of rather unsavoury characters as well, so beware of your surroundings and stay safe. That said, I was still intrigued to be on Hollywood Boulevard, checking out the stars on the Walk of Fame and the hand prints and footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. There were many interesting photo ops and no shortage of living statues and other sights to take in. I watch the Jimmy Kimmel show, so it was awesome to see where the show is taped (in non-COVID times). If you're looking for cheap souvenirs, this is your chance!

While staying in San Diego for business we decided to take the train (Amtrak) to Hollywood
The train trip was fine and we took the subway 11 stops to Hollywood/Vine
As soon as we exited the station onto the street the walk of fame was right there.
It went on for blocks and blocks on both sides of the street
The smell of cannabis was everywhere. Dirty looking people were everywhere and we caught 2 guys even urinating on the street!
The sidewalks are dirty. Tourist souvenir shops everywhere and many tour
Guides trying to sell you a ticket
We did three museums which we enjoyed and found a mall with clean restaurants to eat at
It seemed many people were high on drugs. Not a place to go by yourself
We wish they would spend more money to clean this place up as the Walk of Fame is so interesting and we unique
We’ve gone once. Won’t be back. But love San Diego!

Visiting Hollywood blvd from DC was an anticipated adventure , drawn in by allure of Walk of Fame and Hollywood's glitz. However reality fell short of expectations. Amidst the excitement of spotting celebrity names, we were dismayed by dustbins and homeless individuals.
The final blow came when we returned to find our car towed, leading to an unexpected expense of ~$500. This experience left a bitter taste, highlighting the need for better signage and information regarding temporary parking regulations. it is frustrating that such location lacks proper infrastructure to guide visitors, leaving them vulnerable to hefty fines and inconveniences.

We visited a few times during our trip. There is more open places and people around at the weekend. So the underlying issues of drug users sitting in the street are less obvious.
Wish the city would help the homeless in providing support because it is not a safe feeling when walking around in off peak times.

If going to Hollywood LA with a family of 5 ( teenagers) do you try and stay near universal studios or do you stay near Hollywood boulevard. Which is the best tour to do to visit beverley hills and go up to the big Hollywood sign?
Written 29 June 2018
I agree with the first answer, and a little bit with the 2nd. We stayed in West Hollywood rather than Hollywood itself as it is safer. To see the big Hollywood sign, the best view is from Griffiths Observatory.

Grazie

Hello me and my husband will be traveling to La in March 2016. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel to stay in?
Written 17 July 2015
It depends on your budget and what you wish to do. Downtown has some great Classic hotels abs the area around hollywood has some well known places. I have stayed in both areas as well as near a few beach cities. I would trust the ratings you read on trip

Traveling to LA with my 16 year old teenage daughter at the end of June, 5 days there. I was looking for suggestions maybe 2 days for Hollywood and 3 days near a beach, any hotel, restaurant and attraction suggestions would be appreciated?
Written 20 February 2015
I agree with most here. Depending on your budget, better to find a nicer area to stay and visit H Boulevard during the day and early evening. There's a bit to see there, but mostly quite tacky, depends what you are into of course. But Hollywood and Bev Hills etc have a few spots of interest. Get on a cheap tour and get a bit of local info. Don't get too excited about H Boulevard though.
