We visited the Queen Mary as an optional tour while in Pasadena for the Rose Parade. The ship is docked in Long Beach and is a very beautiful area. From the ship you can see the skyline of Long Beach. The ship is very beautiful with all the wood and brass and some of the original features of the ship. We learned a lot of historical facts from this tour and would recommend seeing it.

The Queen Mary - Hotel & Museum
Built in 1934 and retired to Long Beach in 1967, the Queen Mary has now been in retirement for longer than she was in active duty. Having sailed around the world and serving as a troop ship in WW2, it is remarkable that she is still with us today. The ship rests alone at the end of a long drive next to a now abandoned Sea Shore Village. There is SO much potential! But, until people wake up and realize that this is a JEWEL to be cherished, nothing will be done. There is a gold mine of opportunity, I just hope to live to see the day it is revitalized.
The HOTEL - Nowhere on earth will you find a finer example of Art Deco design and refinement at sea than right here in in Long Beach, CA. The rooms, for the most part, are all preserved EXACTLY as they were back in the glory days of sailing. Each room or suite is different in size, shape and amenities. The decor is wood, the portholes still open and work and the smells of old Queen Mary waft throughout your visit. We have stayed in her larger suites, her smaller rooms as well as her Royal named suites and without fail, we have enjoyed the visit. The size of the cabins is ample and everything is smartly laid out. The wood walls, trim and cabinets really glow in the amber light of night. The water pressure is good. The water is hot and the heating and cooling works as needed! The beds are comfortable and the views special. What more can you wish for?

We had some time to waste between getting off our cruise ship in Long Beach and checking in to our hotel later that day. The entrance of the Queen Mary was only a 5-minute walk from the cruise exit, so we decided to spend our time there. We hesitated because of the cost (approximately $45 each), but we ended up spending 4 hours there, and they were busy hours!
We bought the tickets at the booth, and they had a luggage hold for our suitcases right behind the ticket area (so nice!). You are given a map of the ship and free rein to explore the ship, the hotel, the museum-like exhibits, etc. And when it is time for your 1-hour guided tour (depending on which one you choose) you just show up at the tour meeting spot. There were maybe 20 people on the Glory Days Tour we took, and we were told some stories and taken into to some rooms that are typically locked. The tour was fine, but we really enjoyed visiting the exhibits on our own. There are some parts on the ship map that are harder to get to, but they were the most interesting parts so don’t give up on your navigation!
There is a lot of walking involved, stairs, and things to step over or into (on some floors), so someone with mobility issues might have some obstacles in accessing all the areas.

My biggest issue was that when I began looking at the VIP tour, it was $150 or so pp. By the time I went back to book it, they jacked the price up to $200 pp! The website claims it is a great tour and they take you into previously restricted parts of the ship, but they do not tell you which parts.
I bit the bullet and bought 2 tickets, and we did it last week. (I've been on the QM before and wanted to see what new areas I could see).
Pros: We got to go into the First Class Swimming Pool, albeit a very short way in on one side. This was due to the pool collapsing into itself. This was the main reason I booked the tour and I loved getting to go inside. We also went into the Captain's Quarters (which didn't impress me since you can still see the rooms through the glass), and the Verandah Grill. That room was also impressive. They take you deep into the boiler room toward the bow, and we had to pass through all of the Halloween stuff for Dark Harbor, which was beyond cheesy. It was a shame to see how much of the lower decks they gutted and just left to fall apart. Below R Deck, we had no idea where we really were and it was extremely dark.
Cons: The other VIP places that they take you which you can visit yourself or on another tour - Bridge, Radio Room, Queens Salon, First Class Shops, exterior of B340. I think too much time was spent on the bridge and in the captain's and officers quarters. I wanted to get into rooms like the Royal Salon, and third class areas deep in the ship to see what they were like.
Rooms that we got into ourselves that weren't included on the tour - Royal Salon, Britannia Room, First Class Dining Room. That one is always locked which is stupid since it is one of the best parts of the ship and they don't let anyone in. If you stand around long enough, a private or public tour tends to go through and we just follow them in after they unlock the doors.
The gourmet lunch at the Promenade Cafe was less gourmet and more "let's everyone talk to get to know each other." We were the first to leave since we wanted to explore the ship.
All in all, it was neat to see the pool and boiler rooms, but not for the price. They need to focus the tour on all restricted spaces and not doddle so long in public areas.

We took the last time slot for the Steam and Steel tour. Our guide Paul was very passionate and informative about the history of the ship and described her as a "war hero". Our tour was all at the back of the ship in the engine room. You could still vaguely smell the oil. Eerie flickering lighting gave it a spooky feel. We were able to see the propellor in a special cutout compartment. My advice would be to show up earlier to have time to do other exhibits that closed by the time our tour ended. The ship was open to walk around from "bow to stern" as described but tour is only in small area. I was hoping to see the bridge controls along with the engine. Anyone who loves engineering will find this especially fascinating.
The ship carpet seemed to be vibrant and wood/brass polished and shiny. Drinks on the observation desk were slow to be served. Inside seats were warm as the sun was setting but outside seats were nice with views of city skyline. I wish we had more time to explore, hopefully can return and spend the night on board next time.

Looks amazing, feels a bit like old glory entering the ship, great staff at check-in. Rooms are reasonable size, narrow bed, musty and wet carpet, the cabin felt run down and severe lack of maintenance. No power outlets to charge a phone or laptop, unless the TV is disconnected (far from the bed). Thin walls, and the staff reminds guest that neighboring rooms and the disco may be heard (you WILL hear the music until 11:30p). No good climate control, the staff offered extra blankets if needed.
Hardly any other facilities, pretty much at the end of an industrial harbor, once arrived it takes miles to go back to town.
Despite having prepaid for the stay, after booking our room, a destination fee of $37.90 was charged.
Parking was advertised as $25 per day. However, the clock runs from midnight to midnight -> ie $50 for a barely 13hr stay !!!
Overall, a rather mediocre stay at a rather high expense and a few nasty surprise charges.
'Would not stay there again or recommend to spend a night on The Queen Mary.

It was an amazing experience overall. The ship has many artifacts and is displayed and labeled throughout like a museum, so if you don’t take any tours you can still learn a lot if history. I took three tours in June 2023 and they do have a lot of overlap in stories and history from tour to tour—so keep that in mind. I was unable to check in to my room for two hours after the stated check-in time of 4 PM, but I just walked around the ship while I waited. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and professional, so would recommend taking one tour. The nighttime paranormal tour gets you access into the “most haunted” room, so if that’s your thing, it’s pretty cool. I don’t think I need to go back, but it was fun to experience the legend and mystery.

Did the paranormal 2 hour night tour. 35 minutes in we got separated from the group and couldn’t find the other 30 people who had entered a staircase and either went up or down but I went down to look and my friend went up but we couldn’t find them. We asked the front desk and other people if they had seen them and no one had seen this large group. We finally asked the front desk if they could find the tour for us and they walked the tour operator and we were told to go to the ground entrance. We walked to the front downstairs and were then escorted through the parking lot in the rain through the front staff entrance and taken to the engine room where the guide had advised they were. We were in the engine room and the group was not there. We went back upstairs and finally found the group and the tour guide stated that she had noticed immediately that we weren’t with them and had hollered out for us in the stairwell within 5 minutes which was not true as we would have heard her. We were literally 10-15 feet behind the group and the girls in front of us must have ran up or down the stairs once they turned the corner. We explained this to the guide and she became very combative with us telling us it was our fault and that she had waited for us but we should have seen her but saw no one. We asked to leave the tour because of her combative reaction, and the fact that we had missed 20 minutes of the tour and asked to get a refund. We were told we would have to call and email for a refund as no one was available at that time. I have been waiting a very long time to visit and tour the Queen Mary and to have this experience was heartbreaking and had me in tears because of this disappointing experience. They need more than 1 person when doing tours of such a large group when no one knows where you are going.

Give yourself TONS of extra time to arrive. There was no traffic getting to the ship and then bam…the line for parking was backed up so far it wasn’t even funny.
I was late for my Steam & Steel tour but it was no problem. They radioed to someone who helped me catch up to the group: it was Captain Brown! Amazing guy!! Even gave me a little history lesson while walking.
Paul was amazing. Seeing and learning about the inner workings of the ship was incredible. If you get him as a guide you’re in luck.
The rest of the ship was kinda meh though! I don’t know what it was but for some reason I didn’t really get a sense of the history of the place despite it being a museum. I found the maps really confusing and as a lover of all things maritime there just wasn’t a ton to look at.
Also - the room/hotel area was completely open to museum goers. I didn’t stay here but I’d be utterly skeeved out with so many people just casually walking back and forth outside of my room, especially without a guide.
Glad I went but not something I’d do again.

My friend and I were meeting hotel guests for dinner, but when we tried to go up, we were told we’d have to buy tickets - $50 total - just to go to the restaurant. We explained we were meeting guests, she said we still needed to buy. Ticket counter woman sold us the tickets, then mentioned if we were visiting hotel guests it would be free. We said, again, that we were in fact visiting guests, and she said I’d have to email to get a refund. She pointed to a spot on the brochure, and I didn’t even realize til I got home that there was no email on it. I was able to call the number on my ticket and get the email that way. In the last 11 days, I’ve left 6 messages, 6 emails, spoken to 3 people who told me the person who could help, but they couldn’t help me or put me in contact with that person. At this point, it’s comical how bad the customer service is. Now their ticketing phone number is disconnected. Maybe it's haunted lol...

Is the ship open for tours everyday? I looked at VIP Tour and the website only shows tours on Friday and Saturday. We were looking to tour the Queen Mary on a Sunday. Thanks

Hi,
I'd love to book the paranormal walking tour to visit the Queen Mary in December but bookings are not open yet on their website. Could you tell me how long in advance you booked your tour and on which site please?
Thanks a lot

There are two tours - the daytime Haunted Encounters Tour or the evening Paranormal Ship Walk.
The evening tour was amazing.
According to the website, you can book 2 1/2 months in advance so you'd be looking at the end of September/beginning of October to book your times.
I can't add a website link but if you type in "Queen Mary Hotel Tours" you will go to the hotel website where you book the tours.

I don’t know as we never participate in those, but they seem very popular. I suggest you book a room for the night and explore the ship, it’s fascinating

Thank you! I should have been more specific. We will be cruising on NCL. Is that walkable from the Queen Mary?

To me it seems doable. The cruise terminal is not far at all away.

Hi
Does anyone have a rough idea of what the deposit and resort fees are please? We are traveling there in April 😁😁😁
Written 13 January 2020
Hi Cheryl, my wife and I stayed at the Queen Mary for 1 night in early November 2019. I don’t know about the deposit (was part of a package) but as well as the $181 room tariff, we paid -
. $3.87 LB City Tourism Assessment
. $0.25 CA State Tourism Assessment
. $15.48 Occupancy Tax
. $18.95 Facilities Fee
Hope this helps. Cheers, David.

Is this Handicap accessible? Could I push an elderly person in a wheelchair through ok?
Written 24 September 2019
There are elevators but it is a long walk to many areas. Parts will be off limits too since there are some parts that the hallways are tight. You could easily have lunch in the restaurant and go to the movie area.
