I don't know if I picked the wrong time of the year (February 4) to visit this place, but it was hugely disappointing. All I could see were tiny birds that I could not even properly identify - they looked nothing like the photos of sandhill cranes I have seen. Perhaps they were young chicks? There were hundreds of these,... More

Even if you are not a birdwatcher, the spectacle of hundreds of cranes in the reserve's fields is wonderful to behold. I try to go to the reserve every year. I have already been in late December and this year in late January. Woodbridge Road runs west from Interstate-5 and dead-ends at a levee on the east of the South... More

We were in town to wine taste but needed a break. Heard that the Sandhill Cranes were in the area. Must go at sunset exactly. Here they come in flocks, many flying overhead but others landing in the fields in front of you. The cry is haunting. If you want to see the cranes in the daytime - head a... More

We don't wait for the Crane Festival. From November through February watching the cranes come home any evening is awe-enspiring.

We make an annual two-hour drive from the bay area to Lodi specifically to see the Sandhill Cranes who've migrated fom the northwest. Both the Isenberg and the Woodbridge Road Crane Reserves are their regular feeding and nesting grounds. Just to see them fly in and hear their unique gurgling calls makes the heart beat faster. The bonus is seing... More

We traveled from the Bay Area to view the fabulous Sand Hill Cranes for their namesake festival in Lodi last weekend. Our nature bus tour drove us out to Isenberg Crane Reserve. They say the birds prefer fewer vehicles so the bus is less stressful for them. We saw many hundreds of cranes as they dove in at sunset. Their... More

Great place to walk and see a variety of birds. The cranes are more abundant certain times of the year.

Watch for the Sandhill Crane Festival in Lodi held the first weekend of November each year. This year is the 20th year! Great for birders and families. At the reserve you can watch the cranes fly in for the night.

Not every visit can be as perfect as ours but our experience at the Isenberg Reserve was extraordinary. We arrived shortly before sunset on a lovely clear evening. The cranes were flying back to the wetlands from feeding grounds by the many hundreds in large flocks, forming wide, single row formations. We could hear them almost before we first spied... More
