Went with my parents, who are a little older. They loved walking along the trail on the lagunitas river among the ferns and redwood groves. It is a very accessible park, but also has a network of trails to get away from it all. Historical areas as well. They have RV and tent only camping, as well as cabins.

This review is for the campground. It is extremely noisy!! Generator city plus the campsites are too close together. I could hear the guy in the next site over snoring. This seems to be a party campground or something. Just very noisy with people who run their generators even at 9pm when I was trying to sleep so I could get up early and hike. Its called CAMPING! If you need every comfort, maybe you should stay home!! I think noisy generators should be banned, because they ruin it for people who are actually trying to camp and enjoy NATURE. Also, the showers run for 4 minutes and the first 3 minutes are ICE COLD!! This place sucks. The redwoods are nice, but the campground sucks.

Beautiful and lush smaller park. Great for a smaller hike- we did a total of 3 mile walk. It was beautiful and relatively quiet.

My husband and I had a wonderful time under the stars camping here. There was hiking, running water for drinking water and toliets, showers, wood for purchase, nice man to help us. It was a great time.

Beautiful State Park with incredible trails for hiking, but for me, biking among the giant Redwoods and fast moving streams. Trails were easy and included bridges and direction signs. Available facilities for camping including cabins for rent...but be sensitive to their popularity and the need for advance reservations!

This is a beautiful drive through an impressive state park, but make sure to be careful at night as it is very dark and there are a lot of curves. We came across two women walking on the road with no lights on and their two unleashed dogs walking on the road.

My boyfriend and I went camping here the first weekend of May and loved it. I have described my experience camping below.
We camped in site 56 and I was a concerned we wouldn't have any privacy. I was completely wrong! The campgrounds on the outside of the Orchard Hill ring are tucked away in the nooks and crannies of the beautiful surrounding redwoods. We checked in with the lovely camp hosts who used a golf cart to deliver wood to campsites (cash only!). The host was very welcoming and happy to assist us at even late hours. Our campground was maybe a 1 minute walk to the bathroom facilities which were clean enough and stocked with toilet paper. If I recall correctly, showers are coin operated and are 25 cents per 2.5 minutes of hot water, very cheap! There are only 3 showers (one male, one unisex and one female) per bathroom unit, but we didn't encounter any lines. I partially subtracted a star because the male shower was out of order, and the unisex shower broken while we were there. The working female shower was hot and working. There wasn't really a bear box (I don't think there are any bears in the area), but they did have a small-ish critter box which we used for grab and go items that we didn't want to store in the car.
The other campers were mostly couples, but there were 2 large groups of teens. They were a little loud but respectful of quiet hours.
Hiking wise, we hiked to Kent lake straight from our campground. We mostly saw bikers along the trail which was mostly well maintained. After that, we hiked down ox trail which is need of some repair but was easy enough.
Overall, we had a very pleasant experience for anyone who loves redwoods and easy camping.

Muir Woods is way more famous thus super crowded. Shuttle buses to get there - just a few miles north and west pits you on sir Granfis Dtske and you will drive by this park- $8 to enter for a car and there are great picnic spots and lots of trails
So much better than Muir Woods in many ways - if you have a car - although local bus does go here too

This campground is nice and well maintained. Call it vintage if you like with small parking pads and space between spots. Wonderful redwoods trees also.

Hoping you can help! I'm having a hard time contacting the park about check in process. We have the group site reserved, but I didn't know if I needed to list each and every car license plate that will be coming... Do you remember the check in procedure? with tent sites, the driver had to be the person listed and they double check care and reservation. thanks!

Honestly I don’t but it shouldn’t be a problem if you have a reservation. It’s a wonderful park
Hope you’re not planning this weekend as we are due for rain which is highly unusual

We would like to visit SF while staying here but avoid taking our car into the city. Any BART stations where we can drop our car for park and ride? Other transit options?

I sorry I had access to a car and am not from the area so am unable to answer your question.
What is typical weather here in beginning of November? And I read about a 10person group site option , anyone familiar with what site that is? Thanks!

The weather is usually around mid 60. If it doesn’t rain then it’s very pleasant and not cold even at night.
Perfect time for hiking and exploring Point Reyes.
It can rain though. So the forecast should be checked before going.
The group site you are talking about is 33 and 34 combined. ( or 34 and 35). You’ll see when you look at the map.
It’s very good and it’s hard to book it.
The park is fantastic.

Are there cabins for rent? If so what are they like and what is the price?

Hello, has anyone camped at the Madrone Group Camping? If yes, was the slight slope an issue? Thinking of reserving the group site for a group of campers and want to know how comfortable the site is...Thanks in advance!

Sorry, haven't been to that particular site in so long that I can't really remember how much is flat and how much is sloped. The campground is usually staffed by a Park Ranger so you might be able to reach them by phone.

I didn't know they had cabins! They don't have a store there that I saw but if you're coming from the east you will pass through a few towns with some stores and restaurants. They do sell firewood at the park but you have to get there before 7. Best to take some with you. Have fun!

Hi. We are picking up a small campervan in San Francisco, and heading north then looping around for a two week holiday. Looking for somewhere close to San Francisco to spend our first night. Samuel Taylor campground looks good. Would we need to book, or could we just wing it in case we want to drive further. Which campground would you recommend for car camping? Thanks, would appreciate any help. Also, we'll be staying in a few State Parks I guess, is there a pass?

California has so many beautiful and breathtaking views at their State Parks, and there are not so far from San Francisco's Bay Area. Samuel P. Taylor State Park is one of them, and has very good camping grounds, and the rangers are so helpful, knowledgeable and eager to assist you and answer any and all of your questions and concerns.
I will really recommend you to give them a call since depending of the season they have access to some of the areas, and they will suggest the best one for your needs and likes, besides they will give you another options for a back up plan in the case you want to drive further to another place! They even have some woods in place if you want to buy some for a campfire!
And yes, there is an Annual Pass, The Golden Poppy Pass" that provides access to a limited number of parks within California.
You can find more information about this pass at:
1 9800) 777-0369 Ext. 5
And for Samuel P. Taylor Park some areas are first come, first served, and you don't need to reserve but again, I will definitively give them a call ahead to avoid any headache:
