Our tour did not prepare me for how amazing these 13th Century carvings were. They were spared during the Cultural Revolution because of their importance. Carved right into stone the carvings depicts heaven and hell. The faces and scenes are awesome and the gold statue of a thousand hands really does have a thousand hands.

These carvings are incredibly interesting. The site is well preserved and easy to walk. We hired a translator/tour guide and she was excellent. The road to the carvings is new, excellent and fast. The rest areas enroute are well done in traditional Chinese style. This is a must see area for those interested in history.

We first saw the rock paintings in 2004 but it was a rushed visit, so we decided to come again. Since we were there, the entrance has been moved. There is now a VERY long hike with a few steps to the entrance to the grotto. There are 2 "museum-like" buildings, one of which contains photos of the Dunhuang grottoes.... More

The Dazu Rock Carvings are great! Surrounded by plenty of nature, which make them different from other Chinese caves like the ones in Datong and Longmen. FYI there are direct buses from Dazu Caves to Chongqing Airport, very useful to avoid going throught Chongqing city to reach the airport. It takes around 2 hours and as you can see in... More

Of the two Buddhist grottos I visited while in China this was easily the winner. I had no idea what to expect but it was not this incredible sight that lay before me. The sheer number of carvings is mind blowing and some fantastic stonework is displayed. I spent quite a bit of time enjoying the multitude of scenes. Well... More

After checking around for the price to join a group tour from Chongqing city, we decided to take the public transportation for a fraction of the cost. Getting there: Subway line 1 or light rail line 3 to Lianglukou station, take exit 3 to Caiyuanba bus station. Take the escalator down for 2 RMB one way, operating hour is 6:45am... More

One of my most favourite spot around Chongqing. I love to walk through the hand carved statues depicting the life and teaching of lord Buddha. As everywhere in China, the gate tickets / entry tickets are comparatively very costly to local life standard but it is always recommended to visit it.

Museum with carving that bring you back in time. 50,000 statues and more than 100,000 carved Chinese characters date as far back as 650 AD

Very long way from the high speed railway station (almost 1h to get to Dazu). You need to get two buses: first 204 to Dazu and then 205 to the caves. But they really worth the visit, they are very different to the others (Luoyang, Datong). You only need 1h to visit them so we go and get back to... More
