The city walls offer a perfect perch to look out onto the ancient city and the area surrounding the wall. There are also many interesting sculptures, military embattlements and equipment, etc.

It can take 5 to 50 minutes, from just a photo to taking a walk on the high wall and being able to take more photos of this charming old city.

I always try and get up onto the City Walls, whenever I visit a City. Height always gives you a different perspective. You can walk a fair way on the Wall now, from the South Gate. If you head East, you can get off at the Confucius Temple. If you head West, I believe you will net to go there and back? Get up on the Wall early, before all the visitors arrive, especially on the week end

Very pretty walled city with no traffic within its walls.
The main streets at night are lit with red lanterns and a must to see. Pingyao is famous for its paper cutting decorations which are exquisite and a beautiful gift to take home.
Hand made woven scarves are weaved in the shops within the city and reasonable to buy
The pork hot pot is a must to try.
Then Confucian Temple is worth a visit together with a number of other interesting historical buildings such as the first bank in China and the history of the bodyguards.

If you come to Pingyao, you must climb up and walk around the ancient city walls. Quite a sight and great views.

Very nice to have a stroll and enjoy a view of the city, its inhabitants and the fast-paced life from there.

Some great statues from the 2008 Olympics up here worth seeking out. Good view of the ancient city well maintained and I just wanted to walk further along it

The South Gate, or Ying Xun Gate, that lies at the south end of South Street is the best gate to visit, but be aware that some maps show a 'South Gate' that lies to the west of Ying Xun Gate. An electric cart can take you to the gate for 10RMB if you do not feel like walking. Taking the steps to the top of the wall offers great views over the town and outside the walls too. It is not possible to walk right around the wall, but walking as far as you can will offer a relaxing pleasing walk. It is also worth walking through the wall to view the cart tracks in the stone paving and an area just outside the wall opens up to an open space that had a crowd watching performances by various groups. This activity is recommended.

I always enjoy walking on city walls in China. This was no exception. It was great seeing the restored wall, but also the unrestored wall, especially on the inside. Unfortunately, due to repair work, you cannot walk very far on the wall
