This city temple has been beautifully restored. The temple itself is quite impressive but compact. The grounds are well kept and beautiful.

It is probably the main highlight to visit in Pingyao. Quiet place if you want to escape the crowded Pingyao.

Some people have said it's a bit far from the town, but we were lucky having a borrowed car, for our trip and drove to another Bhuddist temple, which was pretty much free of tourists. There were some interesting sculptures of various gods and a Tang Dynasty ‘Scholar’s Tree’ 1400 years old.
There were only 2 other people there when we went and they'd come by local bus.

This is a Taoist temple complex that was rebuilt in 1864 but has been on this site since the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279AD). Entry into the large site is through a long tunnel-like gate and opens into a courtyard. There are actually three temples and the first is that of the City God who is an imposing figure wearing a gold cloak. A special feature of this complex are the blue and green coloured glazed tiles. An hour would be a good period of time to view the Temple.

Since come to Pinyao to visit, we spent sometime to visit this temple that claimed to be a Taoist temple built hundred years ago. Lots of prayer to come here to pray for wealth and the architecture is beautiful and really a heritage gem.

This is one of a number of old buildings you can see (for a fee - free for seniors with their passport). It is an interesting temple which is still in use today.

The temple where people will come to pray and seek peace. A big place and consider a very important part in the peoples life at that time. Good to visit and understand.

This is a must see in Pingyao, it gives you a good idea of what a City Temple looks like. Just like every village/town has a church in western world, every town/village in China has a city temple. It shows you all necessary elements that comprise the temple.
Also, interesting scenes on heaven and hell. and how bad deeds led to various punishments in hell are vividly displayed through its sculptures on the side buildings of the city temple.

Devoted to the city god. Various Taoist temples, ancient trees. Not exceptional but certainly worth visiting as one of the 6 attractions on your tourist ticket.

Daoist temples are my favorite style temples in China. I think it is because of their often misunderstood gods they have protecting the place. I often feel like the statues could come to life. If possible, have a guide tell you about the temple or look it up before you go to help you understand better. There are some signs in English.
