The area inside is fairly large. Lots to explore. A lot of big groups coming and going. The Fenzhou tower was god to climb and the immortal fox tower at the very back of the complex.
Nice garden at the back of the complex.

The small entrance is deceptive of the large courtyards and building complex behind! Audio guides make the visit very enjoyable. These guides can be kept for the day and used on 17 or so of the refurbished buildings in Pingyao. Free admission for those over 60.

I think this was my favourite of the ancient city attractions. Plenty to see, prison cells, instruments of torture, calligraphy, a Lilly pond and even a live Chinese opera performance. There's a couple of towers to go up to get roof top views over the city.

The County Government Museum is situated in Pingyao Ancient City and is one of several main tourist attractions in the city. It is large and has several courtrooms and a prison. There is also a show (of a court hearing) for entertaining the tourists. The gardens are well maintained with beautiful flowers.

A 'yamen' was where the local magistrates worked and sometimes lived in during imperial China. The Pingyao County Yamen is far bigger than most I've come across in China, which probably should not be that surprising considering the prosperity and importance the town enjoyed in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

This place is larger in size than most other attractions in Pingyao. I will have to disagree with some reviewers that it is less interesting than the others - I've certainly found the place to pack a lot of punch.

The county courthouse, mayor's dwellings and local jails are all very interesting. The halls that explained ancient torture methods are particularly fascinating, but not for the faint-hearted.

I imagine the lack of English translations on most things on display can make the experience frustrating for visitors who are unable to read Chinese, which is truly unfortunate as I found my journey here highly informative overall.

A good ancient building with well protection and maintenece. You can get some basic feeling or idea about how the local govenment operation back to nearly 380 years ago in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Also, don't miss the performance that the magistrate of the Pingyao County Government holds a court trial, normally at 10am and 3:30pm local time. Very interesting.

This is the largest of the sites to visit with your Pingyao visitor ticket, but it many ways, it's one of the least interesting. Unlike most of the others, there are many gardens to take a rest, but the buildings themselves are more functional in design and aren't as detailed. Plus, the courtyards are much, much larger, so you get a different feel of space. It stretches over several blocks, but each courtyard is remarkably similar to the last. The squeamish should avoid the punishment blocks. Some of the torture methods on display are truly barbaric.

With the entry ticket to Old City you get access to all of the ancient buildings.

This particular one has quite a few signs in English and it is an interesting insight into an ancient society, especially the methods devised to inflict pain and punishment.

Excellent example of Chinese imperial local government center. Gives a great example of how the government operated in the days of the local magistrates.
