I visited Railtown 1897 State Historic Park with a friend on Easter Sunday. They were holding Easter Egg Hunts with the Easter Bunny, so the place was understandably quite full with families and children. We expected to take a quick walk around the park, and...More

The highlight of this park is the working shop where they maintain the locomotives and stock. As a bonus, there have been many (over 100?) film shoots here; both television and film.

If you like trains then this is a place you will enjoy. You can see an old stream train, Number 3, that is still in use, along with other types of operational trains. This is a working facility that is restoring old trains. On weekends,...More

The state park has a good collection of railroad items especially from films but the day we were there did not click. The park was getting ready for its version of the Polar Express and some 8000 people seeing Santa Claus. As opening was a...More

Beautiful and quiet setting. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is lots to see and plenty to learn. Me and my friend were visiting from England so we were amazed at the landscape the train ride took us through. I would definitely return!

Had such a great tour. So informative. The tour was small in size which was nice, more of a one on one feeling and great for asking questions. Our guide was a train enthusiast and you could tell he loved his job. The history of...More

Railtown offers a small but interesting collection of steam engines and period railroad cars. Perhaps the most interesting thing is the historic roundhouse (one of only a few still in existence). We arrived late so there were no tours and the engines were not running....More

We recently visited Sonora, Jamestown and Railtown and were very impressed with the #8 Locomotive. We had previously watched the PBS documentary on how it had been completely refurbished and driven to the park but never thought we would be able to actually ride on...More

You can actually walk around and see a lot outside of operating hours. Check their website. Trains don't run everyday and occasionally they run a steam engine in addition to diesel engines so you may want to plan a specific... More
